Róisín Shortall thinks Eamon Gilmore was out of touch, in denial and should have quit sooner

The former junior minister and Labour TD gave a wide-ranging interview to TheJournal.ie this week.

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

FORMER JUNIOR HEALTH minister Róisín Shortall has no shortage of views on James Reilly, the current state of the health service and the state of her former party, Labour.

In an in-depth interview with TheJournal.ie at our offices in Dublin this week, Shortall discussed events in health in the nearly two years since she left the department.

We also asked about the current state of the Labour – a party she has “no plans” to rejoin - whether Eamon Gilmore should have gone sooner and what she thought of that infamous ‘Every Little Hurts’ ad.

Outside of the political game we asked about the latest abortion case and whether she thinks the government needs to repeal the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Act.

We also asked the Dublin North-West TD whether she thinks she’ll ever be a minister again?

Watch the interview above.

Róisín Shortall: We need more than just politicians to start a new political party

Róisín Shortall: I’m surprised the ‘very inexperienced’ James Reilly wasn’t sacked

Gilmore needed to sort out jobs for his family and friends first — that takes time, then he retired.

If Roisin Shortarse had all the answers, how come she wasn’t the hecking leader of the Labour party. She complained when O’Reilly put a clinic in his constituency but she thinks it was OK for her to weight the selection process so that her constituency got one. Anyone involves in tender or selection processes know how to get what they want by stacking the deck. I wouldn’t listen to her nonsense.

Well she did resign on a point of principle was she the first Irish minister ever to do so ? Normally they cling on tightly for dear life to the trappings of power…. Ultimately she has been proven right about Reilly

It’s a bit rich of Shortall criticising all her ex colleagues. She was given the job of sorting out Primary Care – what did she do? When the going got rough, she walked off the pitch. Not a team player – she is better off as an independent – sniping from the back benches.

Gilmore done what for the country and the Irish people, didn’t hear any reply other than what I know he did nothing absolutely nothing. His big mouth fell silent when he got into power, he fudged and back away from fair sensible decisions and got high paying jobs for all his family. Good riddance Gilmore . Fair play to Mrs Shorthall and Mr Broughan for saying no to him in government and turn their backs on him.

Excellent, open interview with Róisín. I especially agree on the abortion issue. Too unclear what the line is on this matter. Mothers’ lives need to be seriously contemplated. How can male psychologists tell what a pregnant woman is thinking? Maybe women psychologists should assess the pregnant women until the referendum is put to the people once and for all.

As Einstein said “no problem can be solved by the same consciousness that created it”.
