Dublin's Port Tunnel reopens, but traffic is still slow

Hauliers were protesting what they see as government inaction on high costs.

DUBLIN’S PORT TUNNEL has reopened after being closed this morning due to a hauliers protest over high taxes on heavy goods vehicles.

The tunnel handles large volumes of traffic coming to and from the M1 to the city centre and its closure has had a knock-on effect for rush-hour motorists, as this map shows. Red areas are considered heavy traffic.

Traffic Gif

Eoin Gavin of the Irish Hauliers Association say that the group wants to meet government representatives to discuss the problems in the industry.

“50,000 jobs are represented here. We’ve been before Oireachtas committees and met with TDs and Senators but there was no reaction in the Budget.”

The HGV ban for Dublin city centre has not yet been lifted, but that could change.

Chaos

Elsewhere, there are delays on the North Circular Road after a crash on Dorset Street and a crash on the M7 inbound near Naas is causing delays.
