THEY ALREADY SHARE a division but it looks like the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders could soon share a stadium with both seeking a move to Carson โ a city in Los Angeles County, California.
While both will continue to look for public money to stay in their current cities, a statement issued late last night says they will jointly fund a venue in LA by the end of the year if they have no luck locally.
โWe are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises.โ
The news comes just a couple of months after Stan Kroenke โ he of Arsenal fame โ plans to build his own 80,000 seater stadium near Hollywood and move the Rams back to LA.
However, while it is unlikely the NFL would allow three teams suddenly descend on LA, it is believed a relatively rare groundshare โ the Jets and Giants are the only two teams to currently share a stadium โ that sees a couple of teams move at the same time, would appeal more than a single franchise.
Canโt see Raiders fans being too pleased with this!
As The42โฒs token Raiders fan Iโm more concerned that it could mean Raiders swapping with Rams and moving into the NFC West. Theyโre bad enough as it is.
Canโt imagine Chargers fans being to happy either, theyโve been in San Diego since the early 60โฒs and will have thousands of lifetime fans there.
A recent poll in LA is heavily favoured towards the Rams returning.
I hope the Raiders stay where they are, I kinda like the poor heuurs.
Chargers fans are not a bit happy. Some of us are going to stop supporting them if go to LA LA land.
They wait 20 years for a team and then 3 come along at onceโฆ.. Who to support is the big question now
Read an interesting article about this. The NFL donโt like 2 teams in the same city been in the same conference. 1 team in NFC, 1 team in AFC. The gist of the article was if this move went ahead, it could see the Seahawks back in the AFC. The article was written by Dameshek and should be on nfl.com. Canโt get a link
