In Pictures: the aftermath of Hurricane Irene

Residents return to their homes along the east coast as New York dealt with the effects of the tropical storm.

THE WORST OF Hurricane Irene appears to be over as the hurricane is now in fact a tropical storm and the damage, although substantial in parts, is less than was initially feared.

Nonetheless the high winds and heavy rain have so far claimed the lives of at least 14 people across six eastern states. Mayor Bloomberg has now lifted a mandatory evacuation order in New York City and residents are free to return home.

Along the east coast, millions have been affected.
