THE EXCELLENT RTÉ Archives Twitter account regularly shares clips that are either hilarious, nostalgic or just plain historical gold.

Today, RTÉ’s archives brought us back to this week 40 years ago when then-US President Richard Nixon made a three-day visit to Ireland.

One of the highlights of Nixon’s trip to Ireland saw him visit the Quaker Burial Ground in Timahoe in County Kildare, where his mother’s ancestors were buried.

Speaking at the cemetery, he said that the most important role of his presidency was to, “play a role to bring peace to not only America but to all the world”.

While his motorcade moving through Dublin, however, a man ran from the crowd at Lord Edward Street and threw at least two eggs at the president’s car before running away from gardaí.

This was the height of the Vietnam War and more protests met Nixon’s arrival at Dublin Castle.
