Criminal tries to ram jeep full of armed gardaí he mistook for rival gang

The man was arrested in Drogheda on Sunday morning.

A CRIMINAL IN Drogheda attempted to ram a vehicle full of members of the Emergency Response Unit on Sunday when he thought members of a rival gang were in the jeep.

The incident occurred on Cement Road in Drogheda on Sunday morning. A source said the man who is known to gardaí as being active in the drugs trade spotted the car and believed the men inside were there to try to kill him.

“He panicked and went to drive the car at them to push it out of the way so he could escape,” the source told TheJournal.ie.

He was coming towards them and all of a sudden they stepped out with bullet-proof vests with garda across them and with weapons.

“It was only then he realised they were guards and not people on the way out to whack him. Initially, he was delighted, I imagine, that he wasn’t going to get whacked, but then quickly realised that he shouldn’t have approached a car full of armed guards in the way he did. They suitably restrained him.”

A garda spokesperson confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested for dangerous driving in an incident involving a garda car in Drogheda on Sunday morning.

He was questioned at Drogheda garda station and later released without charge. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
