Major emergency plan declared for Dublin after massive flooding

An off-duty Garda is missing after falling into the Liffey in Wicklow, while heavy rain wreaks havoc with transport across the country.

A MAJOR EMERGENCY plan is being invoked by Dublin City Council and South Dublin County Council because of flooding in the region.

The co-ordination office is based at Tara Street fire station, where meeting were held on Monday night to decide on emergency measures for homes and roads hit by the flooding.

Dublin City Council’s flooding emergency line is 01 679 6186.

Tonight fears were growing for a man in his 20s – thought to be an off-duty Garda – who went missing in Co Wicklow while directing traffic.

Residents were being evacuated from some areas in Bray, while Cabra and Kilmainham were also both looking at resident evacuations.

Heavy rain in Dublin, the east coast and other parts of the country also wrought havoc with public and private transport.

These roads are currently closed:

  • Ballybough Road
  • Rock Road
  • Dodder Road
  • Grand Canal Quay
  • Blake’s Cross to Lusk

One lane of the M1 motorway is closed between the airport and Balbriggan. Gardaí have also advised that Junction 13 (Ballinteer) of the M50 is still impassible, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

A section of the M1 is closed northbound just after the Port Tunnel, and diversions are in place. Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel due to the flooding, though waters are beginning to slowly recede.

Luas services on both the red and green lines were disrupted, while DART and Iarnród Éireann services have also been affected by the heavy rain lashing the country.

Sligo Intercity and Maynooth Commuter services were suspended due to flooding at Broombridge; while Belfast Enterprise and Northern Commuter services were suspended due to flooding at Clontarf.

Those wondering about how they will make it to work tomorrow should be aware that Irish Rail have promised to tweet updates from 5.30am tomorrow on their Twitter account: @irishrail.

The following video from Martin Murphy shows the river Poddle bursting its banks at Ravensdale Park in Crumlin. The river Dodder has also burst its banks and flooded parts of Ballsbridge.

This evening Dundrum Town Centre was also evacuated, with some parts of the complex under water. See Daniel Hunt’s video of it here.

The following Dublin Bus routes have been affected:

  • Route 13 - operating via St James’ Hospital southbound; via Homefarm Road and not serving Griffith Ave on northbound
  • Route 150 - Not serving Crumlin village, using Long Mile Rd to Walkinstown
  • Routes 77a and 27 - Terminating at Cheeverstown Road
  • Route 69 - Not serving Saggart or Rathcoole; terminating Citywest
  • Route 123 - Not serving SCR or Galtimore Road; operating via Herberton Rd and Crumlin Road in both directions
  • Route 78a - Operating via St James’s Hospital and SCR
  • Route 65 - Operating via Cheeverstown Rd via Citywest and Blessington Rd
  • Route 65b - Operating via Cheeverstown Rd to Fortunestown Lane

Live updates on road closures in the capital can be found on Dublin City FM’s @LiveDrive twitter account.

Other parts of the country are also being affected by the bad weather, with reader @patsyferry warning that there is flooding on the N13 dual carriageway at the junction to Dry Arch roundabout and that extreme care in needed on all roads in Donegal.

Motorists are also being warned off certain roads in Wicklow, including the Sally Gap, all roads to Valleymount and Lacken. Ballyfolan, Oldcourt and Blessington village are impassable.

For immediate updates on road closures, check AA Roadwatch or follow TheJournal.ie’s Twitter list of accounts with details on the floods – you’ll find it at @thejournal_ie/flooding.

Seems like this is going to become a regular occurrence, surely these people know exactly what they are doing, legislation is seriously required…………

@Julie: Agree they know what they are doing, but already have laws and legislation regarding the use of drones near airports and other locations. The people doing this just don’t care.

@Julie: as I said in the previous event… they need a mechanism to stop it. It’s already illegal. Ireland has plenty of laws, enforcement is lacking.

@Richard: good drones can’t fly in restricted areas, they literally land. But cheap ones with no GPS can
