A NEW POLL has found that most Irish people want to see neutrality locked into the Constitution.
The research has been produced by Red C on behalf of independent TDs Clare Daly and Mick Wallace.
Responding to the survey, 57% of those asked said that Ireland’s neutrality should be enshrined in the document.
The research company noted that while this shows that the idea is generally favoured, the public is not “overwhelmingly” behind it.
Support was also found to be spread pretty evenly across age and gender demographics, although with higher levels of support among females aged 45 to 54.
Shannon Airport
The survey also looked at Shannon Airport and its controversial use by the US military.
Both Wallace and Daly have expressed long-time opposition to this, and last December were arrested and detained at Limerick Prison over non-payment of fines.
They had received these for breaching security at Shannon Airport in July 2014.
The Red C research found that more than half (55%) were against the use of the airport for military transit purposes.
Of those that supported Shannon not being used, 62% were female and 47% were male.
