ACTOR ROBERT CARRICKFORD, best known for playing Stephen Brennan in Glenroe, has died at the age of 88.
As well as his role in the RTÉ drama series, Carrickford was a stage actor and performed on the Abbey’s stage in various productions between 1969 and 1980.
He was also a dedicated union activist as a member of the Irish Actors’ Equity Group, a division of Siptu which represents people in the acting profession, since the 1960s.
In this role, he lobbied government for better conditions for those involved in stage acting.
President Michael D Higgins was one of the people who has paid tribute to Carrickford. The president said that in his work with the trade union movement he,
left a lasting legacy for all those who perform in Ireland’s theatres and screens.
Carrickford died today after a long illness and is survived by his wife, daughter and two grandchildren.
