A DUBLIN BUS was damaged this afternoon after it struck a tree branch in Clonsilla.

Images from the scene show significant damage to the top deck at the front of the 39A bus. The incident occurred at the junction of Mountview Road and Hartstown Road.

Two Dublin Fire Brigade trucks attended and two HSE ambulances were also sent to the scene as a precaution. A garda spokesperson said there were no injuries in the incident.

The damaged bus has now been removed from the scene and council workers have cleared the debris.

A Dublin Bus spokesperson said that the company is investigating the incident.

@James Groden: it’s called editorialising the news and is an insidious practice, particularly in media where journalists feel they also have to be activists.

@Brendan O’Brien: I did. See my response to your other comment below. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. I could also have mentioned how the writer makes a point of saying how FF completely misjudged the mood of the country. That is not what we normally count as a fact. That is an opinion.

I see the Journal.ie has yet to learn the difference between opinion and news. Say what you will about them but at least the Irish Times (not a noted friend of the Pro-Life side) would have had the dignity and journalistic ethics to know which category to assign this article to – though even their opinion writers might have hesitated to write something quite this lopsided.

@Brendan O’Brien: oh dear. Someone needs to do a course in media criticism. The article opines that the focus in the run up to the 2018 referendum was on FF; it mentions how a period of reflection was required for FF post referendum to ensure they didn’t alienate young urban voters. These are inferences that a person will make if they have a particular POV. They are not a neutral recounting of the facts. Frequent references to FFers as the ‘Soldiers of Destiny’ are meant pejoratively and the inclusion of a photograph of No-voting FFers is all meant to serve the narrative of ‘How could they have got it so wrong?’ Again, not neutral.

@Paul Dowling: It appears factual and analytical to me, and not anti-FF. I may be mistaken but I see only one ‘soldiers of destiny’, which, as I mention below, is probably intended for stylistic variation.

I think FF has had difficulties in terms of discarding its traditional social conservatism and coming to terms with no longer being Ireland’s dominant party. It and FG would need to wake up.

@Brendan O’Brien: whatever difficulties FF has are irrelevant when it comes to reporting the facts. Drawing out the implications of policies and events is what op-eds are for. Now, a clever journalist can still subtly get their biases across while cloaking them in factual language, but this writer didn’t even try to hide them. The very last line ‘…this still rings true today.’ That sentence has no business being in a straight-up news piece. Attributing a mood to the party without quoting anyone in particular (or quoting them as an afterthought) is poor professional practice. The Journal should have made it clear this was an opinion piece.

Anyone hear the interview on Newstalk from an abortion rights advocacy group where she stated they demanded abortion on request up until the point of birth? I was absolutely flabbergasted that anyone could have such a view. Was so bad I thought she might have been a plant put in by the pro life side.

@Sheila McNulty: the only thing they have to look foward to, and this corrupt world

The hour of the justice of God is close, and will be terrible!”

“Tremendous scourges are impending over the world, and various nations are struck by epidemics, famines, great earthquakes, terrific hurricanes, with overflowing rivers and seas, which bring ruin and death.”

“If the people do not recognize in these scourges (of nature) the warnings of Divine Mercy, and do not return to God. ANOTHER TERRIBLE WAR WILL COME FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST. RUSSIA WITH HER SECRET ARMIES WILL BATTLE AMERICA; WILL OVERRUN EUROPE.

LAUNCH FORTH INTO THE WORLD A MESSAGE TO MAKE KNOWN TO ALL THAT THE
SCOURGE IS NEAR AT HAND, The justice of God is weighing upon the world. Mankind, defiled in the mire, soon will be washed in its own blood, by disease; by famine; by earthquakes; by cloudbursts, tornadoes, floods, and terrible storms; and by war. But men ignore all these warnings, and are unwilling to be convinced that tragic events are hanging over the world, and that the hours of great trials are at hand’

The unwillingness of your opinion piece writer (masquerading as a news report) and of several of those commenting here to acknowledge that people opposed to abortion have a deeply felt conscientious objection to the taking of human life does them little credit. There can be few measured observers who believe that those deputies who refused to vote for the PBP motion are unaware of the influence exerted by the unrelenting media campaign to remove what few pro-life protections remain. Rather than throwing insults, reflect instead on these uncommon instances of professional politicians being prepared to put their beliefs and principles ahead of negative media and the risk of endangering their parliamentary seats.

Wonder why the media failed to report this story. As for the vote…FF are a political party without direction. Their political lives depend on Varadkar and FG.
