6 things we learned today about how we watch telly

Plus, why do most of us now use social media while watching our favourite shows?

ERICSSON HAS PUBLISHED a report into the evolving habits of television watchers and it has provided us with some interesting facts.

The global survey asked people about how they watch telly during this “new era” in television. What with the rise of social media, on-demand broadcasts and DVR (recorded TV), technologies have changed the fundamental ways in which we approach entertainment, according to Ericsson.

Did you know?

  • that 62 per cent of people now use social media while watching TV. That is 18 per cent more than this time last year with women more likely than men to use Twitter, Facebook etc;
  • that despite the global recession, only seven per cent of people have cancelled their television packages since 2011.
  • that more than 40 per cent of consumers are willing to pay for HD quality.
  • Seven in ten people use tablets, smartphones or laptops in their everyday TV viewing – either for watching videos or for using Twitter and Facebook.
  • And yes, while we’re starting to use our phones to watch content, we’re still not willing to pay for it.
  • Although we love recording programmes with Sky Plus and UPC On-Demand services, broadcast TV is still the dominant form of consumption.

Why do people use social media while watching television?

  • They don’t want to watch alone
  • To gain a community feeling
  • To validate one’s thoughts against a public sample
  • To seek additional information
  • To influence content
  • Gratification of being acknowledged by others
  • A need for further analysis

If I watch TV with my technophobe mother, I have to keep my laptop open.
I must be prepared for the challenge,
“I recognize that fella, he was in something else, what was it? will you check the internet there, the imbd?!? C’mon it’ll drive me mad!”
Game of Thrones was a nightmare, full of people she knew from somewhere else.

People go mad for twitter while watching Vincent Browne and the like. I, for one, like it.
With political based TV getting a feel for what others are thinking is pretty interesting, though when you find your the minority, sometimes a little disappointing. Including all the links and info that people have a sudden desire to share it’s pretty worth your while to keep the laptop or phone with you while watching.

I’m not sure about soaps and that but I guess it’s just nice to be able to have a natter with other people who want to listen. Unfortunately my poor mum had to put up with plenty of blank stares and headphones from us kids when she made comments while watching corrie.

I guess in one way you could say we are becoming less social, community based with the rise in technology but also as humans we long for some social and sense of community so we are using technology in this way.It is quiet interesting

All you have to do is unsubscribe from their posts or un-friend. It is coming up a lot lately people giving out about other peoples post being too personal or about silly stuff like X Factor. While I agree people put too much personal information and pointless stuff it is up to us to unsubscribe, ignore or un-friend.
