Weather warning over gale force winds

Gale force southerly winds will hit some areas later this evening, Met Éireann has said.

MET EIREANN HAS issued a severe weather warning over gale force winds expected today.

The day will begin wild, windy and mostly cloudy, with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. More persistent rain will develop in western areas later this afternoon, said Met Eireann, and there will be fog on hills and some coasts.

Dry periods will be experienced in eastern areas, with some bright spells at times.

However, the weather will become extremely windy by evening time, with gale force southerly winds with some very severe or damaging gusts. Met Éireann said the top temperatures will be 11 or 12 degrees.

Said Met Éireann:

Gale force south to southwest winds developing during Friday with gusts of 90 or 100km/hr in exposed areas, but more severe gusts of 100 to 140km/hr are expected, for a time, in the late afternoon and evening, highest in exposed parts of Connacht and Donegal.

Winds will also reach storm force 10 at times later on coasts from Slyne Head to Erris Head to Malin Head.  It will be extremely windy for a time early tonight in parts of the northwest and north, but winds will ease overnight.

We will also experience rain around the country:

Rain clearing quickly to showers in western and northern areas and later clearing from eastern and southern parts. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with a slight frost in places towards dawn
