The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are nine things you want to know as you start your day.

EACH DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #SEARCH: A search for a 64-year-old man who was last seen swimming in Ahenny quarry in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary yesterday evening has resumed this morning.

2. #NEW ZEALAND: A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck off New Zealand, jolting the nation’s capital but there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

3. #TRAYVON MARTIN: Thousands of people in cities across the US held rallies yesterday urging authorities to press charges against a neighbourhood watch leader found not guilty in the shooting dead of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin. Superstar couple Jay Z and Beyonce were among the protesters.

4. #DROWNINGS: In a exclusive interview with TheJournal.ie, Minister Simon Coveney spoke about the new €1 million safety plan for fishermen to curb drownings. He said he’s been to “too many funerals and scenes of bodies being brought ashore”, including his own father, who drowned in 1998.

5. ANGLO TAPES: It has been revealed this morning in the Sunday Independent that Enda Kenny had been in contact with Matt Moran, the chief financial officer at Anglo Irish Bank, three months before the bank was nationalised. The former central figure at the bank was also in regular contact with former Fianna Fail TD, Beverley Flynn.

6. #HSE: How many people have left the HSE over the last four years? A lot. More than 10,000 people in fact, as the health service has had its budget slashed massively and imposed a hiring freeze.

7. #ORANGEMEN: An Orange Order parade with a few thousand supporters passed off peacefully yesterday afternoon, but PSNI stopped marchers from entering the staunchly nationalist area of Ardoyne. Here is the parade in pictures.

8. #BELGIUM: Belgium will get a new king today when the current monarch, Albert, abdicates following a 20-year reign and hands over the throne to his son Philippe.

9. #HEATWAVE: If we were to believe New Zealand weather guru Ken Ring, the man who predicted the exact dates of the current heatwave, then we can expect this sunny weather to last until 11 September, according to the Sunday Independent.

Why is it necessary to inform us that Beyonce and Jay Z were among those protesting the Trayvon Martin decision?

HSE is still far too top heavy with pen pushers and under qualified persons making critical decisions for the health and well being of our citizens.
Sack them all and start again.

So sad and tragic so many young lives lost. Wish the appropriate state agency would do more promotion awareness on tv and radio. It does not take a genius to figure that more people will take to the waterways of ireland during a heatwave but are not aware of the dangers.
