Storm-damaged Clerys store to stay closed for days

Deluge caused major damage to iconic O’Connell Street department store building.

MANAGEMENT AT THE 150-year-old Clerys department store in Dublin has announced that its doors will remain closed for the next few days because of damage caused to the building last night.

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning pelted the building – along with the rest of Dublin and parts of Cork – just after midnight last night. While other homes, offices and shops were also facing a clean-up this morning, it appears that the flood caused particularly “significant” damage to the Clerys building on O’Connell Street. The roof was compromised by the deluge and after an initial inspection today, management said that they would be forced to keep Clerys closed for “coming days”.

They are still assessing the full extent of the damage.

The current Clerys building dates back to 1922, and is iconic to shoppers for its prime location on the capital’s main thoroughfare. Culturally, “under Clerys clock” is often cited as a meeting point for Dubliners and visitors alike. Clerys was previously housed in a building on the same site which was constructed in 1853 but was gutted during the fighting in the 1916 Rising.

The homepage of the Clerys website currently notes the effects of the night’s storm:

Hope the staff continue to get paid, and the stores back to its former self before too long!

Me too, the roof was damaged but they have the front doors covered up, I hope the rain didn’t come right down through the shop.
