Pics: Flooding reported as thunderstorm hits Dublin

Even Dublin City Council offices have been affected, with water entering the main lobby.

FLOODING HAS BEEN reported around parts of Dublin this evening as thunder and lightning hit the capital.

A Luas substation was hit during the thunderstorm, leading to power being turned off between the Beechwood and Brides Glen stops on the Green Line.

However, the power has since been switched back on, and the Luas is back working as normal, with some minor delays to be expected.

The extent of the flooding in the Jones Road area, near Croke Park, is evident in these photographs taken by John Courell:

Dublin City Council said in a statement:

The thunder storms in the centre of Dublin today have been far more intense than were predicted. At the moment the drainage system is working to maximum capacity but the rain intensity is beyond the capacity of the drainage system.

It said that all of the Council’s drainage crews have been mobilised and the Dublin Fire Brigade crews have been mobilised also. “The localised flooding will persist until such times as the rain stops as there is nowhere that the water can be pumped to,” continued the statement.

Dublin City Council staff will be monitoring the drainage network including rivers and streams throughout the evening.

The Dublin City Council offices have also been affected, as this photograph from Aoife Valentine shows:

Councillor Andrew Montague confirmed that photographs show flooding on the Sword’s Road in Santry, near the Swiss Cottage. He said that it is a common spot for flooding, but that the council had put a lot of work into the area to try and curb this.

Montague said that the rain started in the Santry area about 30 minutes ago and has been coming down really heavy. “It’s absolutely lashing and there is thunder and lightning.”

According to TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, there is also “serious” flooding on Griffith Avenue in Marino. Henry St is also reported to have been affected by flooding, while AA Roadwatch says that Sheriff St, Macken St/Hanover St and the Shelbourne Road/Landsdowne Road junction have all been affected by floods.

Traffic lights are currently out of action on Dame St, at the Olympia Theatre.

Met Éireann says that we can expect “sunny spells and scattered showers for the rest of the day”, with showers most frequent and heaviest in the midlands and north.

Isolated thunderstorms will continue until late evening, but showers will mostly die out tonight.

@STOIC SAVAGE: Who said they owned them, being in possession of counterfeit/stolen goods is an offence ,what about all those raids where such goods are confiscated and destroyed. If they are the rightful owners they will be able to prove it,right.

Whom ever buys luxury watches must know they always look incredibly tacky and tasteless. Don’t care if you are a criminal or just massively rich expensive doesn’t mean much if you have no style or taste.

Has the CAB made any progress on the investigation into O’Bribes donations to the ex minister Lowry and the findings of the Moriarty Tribunal…?

What if they got the watch as a gift?
I often wonder about the need to take luxury watches.
Obviously if bought from dodgy money that’s fair enough, but will they be sold then with the boxes and papers? Otherwise they straight away lose value and nobody will want them.
They both look fairly fake too just to note.

@Madra: if they got watches as a gift then all they have to do is prove it and get their watches back , simple as that.
