Weinstein and Disney to turn 'Artemis Fowl' into live-action film

Producer Harvey Weinstein – who founded Miramax Films – will team up with Disney to adapt Irish author Eoin Colfer’s children’s book.

IRISH AUTHOR EOIN Colfer is to see his best-selling children’s book series Artemis Fowl turned into a life-action film – by Walt Disney Pictures, no less.

The renowned producer Harvey Weinstein, who is the founder of Miramax Films, is to team up with Walt Disney Pictures to make the film, it was announced today:

The collaboration is an interesting one for a number of reasons, not least because Disney and Weinstein stopped working together in 2005, following a dispute over the distribution of the Michael Moore film Fahrenheit 9/11.

Plus, Robert de Niro and Jane Rosenthal are the film’s executive producers.

Weinstein and Disney have put any differences aside to come together and adapt the best-selling book into a live-action movie, which the Hollywood Reporter says will be based on the first two installments in the Artemis Fowl series.

It also notes that the film rights to Artemis Fowl were bought by Miramax – which Weinstein left in 2005 – in 2001, but under an agreement Weinstein would be allowed to produce this specific film.

The film has a new screenplay from the man who wrote the screenplay for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, so it looks as though Artemis Fowl will see Colfer’s fame rise to stratospheric levels.

The book series has already sold more than 21 million copies worldwide.

In 2011, Fowl, a supervillian in the book series, ranked third in a Forbes list of richest fictional characters.

I’d love if it was set and filmed here like in the books but I can see it being Americanised like Darren Shan’s books….

This could end up being very good or very bad depending on how they handle the storyline

Yes, shame on him for being successful. Anyone in this country who improves their lot in life should be executed, that will make the country better…Somehow.

Interesting that a lot of good writers, past and present are irish or english, rather than American, yet the americans latch onto it. Hope he makes some good cashmoney from this deal.

JK Rowling demanded that the Harry Potter Franchise be shot in Britain starring British actors. Has Eoin Colfer made a similar request for Ireland? It would be great for the Irish Film Industry and help launch some budding Irish actors. I was addicted to the books when I was a child and Dublin, Wexford and other Irish sites like Newgrange are used throughout.

Fair play to him! I just hope he’s smart with his contract like JK Rowling.. Don’t give the movie makers too much control!!

Well done eoin great series, (will be getting the books when my sons are a bit older) Never knew they were from an Irish author. Darren Shan and Michael Scott are also great kids/teen Irish author’s.
