Most people in Ireland have never had a sexual health test

Almost a third of people in a study said they are not concerned about their sexual health.

A NEW STUDY has shown that that majority of people in Ireland have never had a sexual health check-up or test.

A series of reasons were put forward by the 70 per cent of people who said they’ve never had a test with over half saying it is because they are in a committed relationship.

32 per cent are not concerned about their sexual health and 23 percent said they always engage in protected sex. Women are more likely than men to go for an STI test, the survey also found.

The cost of contraception was cited as a problem by almost three quarters of participants in the study who said it was too expensive. This was most prevalent among women.

Over 12,000 people were found to be infected with some form of STI other than HIV last year with more than 6,221 infected with Chlamydia which often presents no symptoms.

Have you ever had an STI test?

Poll Results:

No (2212)
Yes (691)

Read: “Dramatic” increase in STIs in Dublin in just 12 months>

Read: Slight drop in STIs – but gonorrhoea at highest figures ever recorded>

I have a separate medical condition that causes me to easily get a lot of repeated infections easily, as this can be an indication of HIV I was tested for this a number of years ago and again recently. The STI clinics provide testing AND treatment completely free. It’s very irresponsible for any sexually active adult not to get themselves checked out whenever they have taken a risk (and sure haven’t we all). Irish adults are pretty atrocious at looking after their own health and the mentality of a lot of people that I know is “sure I’d rather not know if I had something”. What about the poor eejit that you’re sleeping with though?! No appointment neccessary, walk in clinic 3 days a week. A lot of STI’s are quite easily treated if caught early enough. http://www.guideclinic.ie/sti-clinic/sti-faq

STI testing is so simple these days, no excuses. A simple urine sample or swab and a blood test is all it take. Max 10 mins. You can even do self screening nowadays. For STI tests in Dublin you can visit http://www.stidclinicdublin.ie
