Boeing 767-300ER Trevor Buckley

Plane flying to US makes emergency landing at Shannon

The Delta plane was flying from Milan to Atlanta when it had to make the emergency landing.

A DELTA AIRCRAFT flying from Milan to Atlanta had to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport today.

A spokesperson for the airport said that the Boeing 767 landed safely at 4.07pm.

He said the Delta aircraft was flying from Milan in Italy to Atlanta, Georgia, in the USA and was diverted to Shannon with 220 people on board.

The aircraft is currently being examined to see whether it is repairable, or whether a replacement aircraft is needed.

The passengers are due to stay in a local hotel until their flight is able to take place.

as the most westerly airport on the EU/US flight path, then I guess it could be deemed the ‘emergency landing capital’, lets just hope the people in Shannon give the passengers good reason to come back and spend more time in the region!

We are a nice bunch here in Shannon, it may not even be a hotel in Shannon their all staying in, could be Ennis or Bunratty. Either way, I’m sure they will have a nice night here in Co.Clare.

There must be huge magnets built out in the burren somewhere that calculates the total wealth of the passengers on board. If it exceeds a total wealth it jams the planes controls and guides it into Shannon.

Also with the ‘Tabloidesque’ Headline describing this an Emergency illicits visions of the aircraft hurdling out of the sky in a ball of flames. This flight had problems with an engine which was shut down and the crew made the decision to divert to Shannon, the closest eTops airport at that moment. I’d imagine that articles like this which do not clarify details probably heighten stress and anxiety in already fearful flyers of which there are quite many out there!
