Two men airlifted to hospital in serious condition after car driven into ravine

The men were rescued from their upturned car after it left the road and plunged into the Arigna river near Drumshanbo in Leitrim.

TWO YOUNG MEN are recovering this evening after being rescued from their upturned car and airlifted to hospital last night.

The crash happened shortly before 7.45pm: the vehicle drove off the Mount Allen Bridge, close to the town of Drumshanbo in Leitrim, and plunged around 20 feet into a ravine below.

The alarm was raised, and a call was put through to the Irish Coast Guard station at Malin from the ambulance service. The Rescue 118 helicopter was dispatched to the scene, and paramedics made their way down into the ravine, which contains the Arigna river – a tributary of the Shannon.

Both men were assessed at the scene, before being winched into the helicopter and flown to Sligo General Hospital, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard told TheJournal.ie.

The 118 helicopter then returned to base, and was immediately dispatched on another mission – which turned out to be a hoax.

It’s a canal blasted out of limestone. 20 to 25 feet deep and about 30 feet across. Usually 4 to 6 feet if fast flowing water.
The poles and Latvians have netted all the fish out of it and destroyed the fishing for years.
