The injured officer managed to drive back to the station gates Google Streetview

Three arrested over 2007 shooting of off-duty PSNI officer

The officer survived the attack, which happened as he sat in traffic. The Real IRA claimed responsibility for the shooting.

THREE MEN ARE being questioned in connection with the attempted murder of a PSNI officer in Dungannon in 2007.

The officer – aged in his 30s and with 11 years service in the force – was shot a number of times as he sat in traffic close to a Catholic Church on 12 November.

He was able to drive back to his station, where he crashed into the front gates, and was rushed to hospital.

The Real IRA claimed responsibility for carrying out the attack later that week, contacting the Derry Journal and using a recognised code word.

The suspects picked up this morning – aged 36, 37 and 41 – were detained in Co Antrim this morning. They are being interviewed in the PSNI’s Serious Crime Suite, also in Antrim.

Detectives are also renewing their appeal on the case. Anyone with information is being asked to contact them on 0845 600 800 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I hope these men, if guilty, get the punishment that they deserve. There is no place in civilised society for fanatics who try to injure their fellow man.

It’s plausible that the psni/ruc done something to warrant this shooting due to there ill treatment towards the catholic community

These people would take any opportunity to shoot a policeman, they need no excuses at all. They are broken beyond repair and thankfully a dying breed these days, still a few dangerous hanger ons though.

    Their, There, They’re
What’s the difference between their, there, and they’re? They’re really not that complicated; once you understand their differences there shouldn’t be any more confusion.

    Their

Their is the third person plural possessive adjective, used to describe something as belong to them. Their is nearly always followed by a noun.

    Where is their car?

    Are these their pens?

Their books are on the table.

This is their room and this is ours.

    What happened to their dog?

Their being here is causing some problems.

    There

    There has several different uses.

    1. Adverb that means the opposite of “here”

    He’s over there.

    Stop right there.

Do you want to sit here or there?

    2. Pronoun that introduces a noun or clause.

There is something strange going on.

    Is there a phone?

    3. Adjective that emphasizes which person.

That guy there seems to be in trouble.

    Those there look good.

    4. Noun that means “that place.”

From there, we drove to Boston.

    I’m not going in there!

    They’re

They’re is the contraction of “they are” and is often followed by the present participle (verb form ending in -ing).

    They’re going to be late.

    Is that what they’re saying?

    I think they’re lying.

If they’re ready, we can go.

    I can’t believe they’re not here yet!

    When they’re older, they’ll understand.

    The Bottom Line

The confusion between their, there, and they’re occurs because the three words are pronounced in very similar ways.

If the word means “belonging to them,” use their. If you’re able to replace the word with “they are,” use they’re. Otherwise, there is only one correct answer: there.

I don’t why it was neccessary to mention that this police officer was shot “close to a catholic church” . It is disingenuous to say such a thing. He was also at traffic lights, that would have sufficed. To embroil the Catholic church into this assassination attempt is nothing short of sectarianism. But I suppose that’s the only way Irish journalism works , lazy and ignorant journalism, It makes British propaganda look bonafide.

I agree there was no reason to say it happened next to a Catholic Church exactly what has that to do with the story …. If somebody has the answer please post it !!

….maybe it was mentioned because that’s where the cowards shot him. I am sure if it was in a Tesco carpark that would have been mentioned also. Funny how your outrage is bot directed at those so called “Republicans” who carried out this disgusting act….

The nominative plural for ‘spy’ is ‘spies’ not ‘spy’s’ which, of course, is genitive case.

learn the rule: your / you’re

your is a possessive adjective, indicating ownership of something
    That is your sock.
    Where is your potato?
you’re is a contraction (combination) of you and are
Do you know what you’re doing?
    You’re stupid.
    The two are not interchangeable.

At least this forum is a lot more sensible but there is still an odd republican apologist lurking.
