Thatched cottages, donkeys and windswept colleens... It must be Vogue's 2013 take on Ireland

Legendary US photographer Annie Leibovitz clearly re-watched The Quiet Man a few times before staging her shoot. The results can be seen in the September issue of the fashion bible.

IF IT WEREN’T for the presence of Girls actor Adam Driver, the casual observer could be forgiven for thinking this Irish spread for American Vogue was shot in 1953 instead of 2013. iPads, for instance, are conspicuous for their absence.

Veteran photographer Annie Leibovitz – who made her name working for Rolling Stone in the early 70s – staged shoots at a number of dramatic rural locations around the country.

The scenes show Driver and model Daria Werbowy demonstrating an enviable ability to connote “sullen” in a wide variety of situations:

1. On/beside a donkey

2. Standing/crouching in a boat

3. Carrying livestock while shirtless/pretending that’s perfectly normal

4. Up a tree

[All photos Annie Leibovitz /Vogue]

The nine-page shoot is featured in the September Issue of US Vogue.

Tourism Ireland says the spread will be a boon for the tourism sector and will help position the country as “a highly desirable and fashionable place to visit”.

I think there is no use in being oversensitive about this nonsense. If an Irish mag was doing a USA feature, we would probably go for Rosanna Davidson or Glenda Gilson eating a hamburger, sitting on a harley, and wearing a native headress. Would the americanos start a debate on it? No use judging it as though it were Time or National geographic.

I’ll tip my forelock at anyone that finds this in any way advancing of the idea of Ireland as a modern, well educated, and far reaching country!

There is a chance that the tourist board will adore this as they are so in love with anything that has Four Green Fields with a shillelagh over ‘me’ shoulder. I can see the powerpoint presentation now… “Leibovitz shot us” “A big spread will encourage the yanks and plastic paddies, I wonder could we call it part of The Gather, be jaysus…” yup, and when they arrive and see the reality, imagine how disappointed they will be when they find that the last pig left the parlour years ago, and that they are more likely to find a wind farm than a farmer riding a donkey as “the fine lady” struggles behind…

    It’s all blarney…
