It’s amazing how this single women’s rights referendum has the government jumping through all sorts of hoops to get it passed so they can all happily clap themselves on the back. I just wish they would put the same sort of effort and urgency into everything….there are other very important issues that place many many more people at risk than abortion such as homelessness…hospital waiting lists…people on trollies in hospitals…care for autistic and kids with disabilities…and the list goes on. Are they going to chop their holidays short to sort out all these things too??? Why does this abortion referendum get all this effort and things that will benefit many more people will just go by the wayside yet again???

@Kevin Tyrrell: and I’m sorry if I come across that the repeal of the 8th referendum doesn’t matter…of course it does. It’s something that must be decided upon and it is a referendum very much worth having. It just bothers me to insane levels that the government places it so high on their “to do” list and there are people out there pleading for services or care or even just some sort of improvement in the services the government provides…but they will be all but ignored. This is just an effort to gain popularity and nothing more…and the government don’t even really care about women or anything in this whole thing…it’s something that if they end up on the right side of will gain them a swell of support and that’s all they care about…votes in a general election.

@Kerry Blake: beyond who is funding who…or who is on whatever side of the abortion argument the point is that the government should be bloody well putting the much wider agenda of services which it is failing to provide to people at the very top of its “to do” list…and should be working every Friday…and Saturday too for that matter to sort these out too and they should be sorted first and foremost. You would swear that the country is fine and all that’s to do is sort out the referendum. This shower should be ashamed of themselves if this is their priority…populism and garnering votes.

@Universal Soldier: shouldn’t they be working on multiple issues at once – ending the export of 3600 abortions a year, the purchase of unregulated online abortion pills, homelessness, health, crime etc. If things go well the first two might be off the list this year though I’m fearful the 8th might not be repealed.

@MichaelandMary O’Grady: why this unholy haste? The chairperson of the Citizens Assembly insisted on getting written answers to the key questions Repeal and abortion at just the second session before even one third of the invited ‘experts had been heard in order to be able to start her report. Meantime Harris was beavering away while the Citizens Assembly was still in session on the wording of Repeal referendum. Equally The Oireachtas Committee forced through a vote before all invited experts had spoken. Despite saying that the government has to wait until the Supreme Court Appeal decision Harris has been busy drafting the Repeal wording and the Abortion bill in accordance with Leo’s press conference pronouncements. Why bother with all the posturing? It’s all a foregone conclusion

@Kay Kehoe: it’s all in an effort to garner votes because this is a popular agenda with the liberal youth and women…this is populism pure and simple. If you want to know why politicians do anything in a hurry it’s for their own political means and nothing else. They don’t care who the repeal the 8th affects or not…they are just going to be damned sure they end up on the popular side of the vote and ride the wave of love and enthusiasm from the voters afterwards. Its soooooo much easier to do than fix the screwed up services in the country and for much less cost too. Repealing the 8th means votes to Leo, Harris and all the rest…and very little else.
