I’m not the one passing judgement here Aoife. I’m simply pointing out the fact that it’s likely the young lad was a member of the travelling community living opposite that street. That’s all. Try reading what I said instead of reading between lines that aren’t there in the first place.

I’m not reading between any lines. Ur previous comment states that you “are assuming the young lad” is a member of the travelling community. I simply asked why you assume that? Do u assume it because he was on a horse or because travellers live in that area? I’m sure settled people live in that area too.

Aoife, every reader here will think you are being naieve at best.
Or at worst an enabler of a general lack of parental responsibility.

Traveller or not, this tragedy is parenting at its worst.

Failure by the authorities to investigate further heaps more tragedy on this sad episode.

I dont why anyone would think I was “an enabler of a general lack of parental responsibility”. It’s tragic accident – I never said it wasn’t but we dont know that there wasn’t an adult with the child – where in the article does it say there wasn’t?

@joey, nothing whatsoever to do with bad parenting. Kids will get up on horses given half a chance, sometimes tragic things happen in life. RIP the little lad. Condolences to the parents.

William, unless you live on a ranch or outer mongolia, kids don’t “get up on horses given half a chance” and if they do, it certainly comes down to bad parenting!

Spring lane and the fields surrounding it have a traveller contingent living there. I’m assuming the young lad was a member of that community.

We dont know that it is reckless horse usage though. All the article states is that a child fell of a horse and died. There could have been an adult walking along side the horse or leading the house by a lead rope and the child could have still fallen off and died. Horse riding is a very dangerous sport even if you use all the safety equipment. I wasn’t trying to start an argument with anybody by my previous comments. The point of the article is that a child died, its not about what community he is from. It could happen to anyone. That was my point. I don’t think it’s right to assume that because he was on a horse and travellers live in that area that he is a traveller. Thats not what the article is about.

The IT are now reporting he is from the travelling community living there. I used the word “assume” Aoife. Look it up. When an accident occurs with a horse on a street that houses a halting site it is reasonable to “assume” that it will be a member of the same community involved.

It matters so when publicised in the media other travellers will know that a child from the travelling community died tragically and they can attend the funeral or commiserate with the family involved. FFS!!!!

……..or it may even lead to a seismic shift in their cultural values which are currently allowing children to play with horses unsupervised.

Just to clarify here that Patrick was on the horse with his uncle at the time of his fall. This is a freak accident, and not due to lack of supervision. The boys were not on the road or street, but just outside their home on the site where the stables are. I was with the family earlier this morning, both as part of my work and out of the affection I bear for Patrick’s parents and uncle. They are destroyed by grief. They loved their little boy dearly and are immensely loving, caring parents to their kids. Please people, don’t make this another opportunity to lash out at Travellers, but instead have some respect, be sensitive, be fair. Leave the talks about protective gear and cultural differences to another day, and don’ t judge if you don’ have full possession of the facts.

RIP. I cannot believe the way people are arguing with each other. There is a young child dead and the nasty remarks are appalling. Deepest sympathy with the little boy’s family and please think before you comment and if you have nothing helpful to say keep your thoughts to yourself with respect for the family.
