    Pistorius is an Afrikaners and they are God-fearing and believe in the power of prayer.

    You don’t understand the Afrikaners. They are mostly strict Calvinists. Everything including political meetings starts with a prayer. In the old days morning parade in the army started with prayers led by the Unit Dominee or, in his absence, by the senior officer on parade.
