STATS RELEASED BY the Dublin Region Homeless Executive show that in almost half of all cases last year, people presenting for help at homeless services were new to the system.
In addition, 75 per cent of all people who were homeless in the Dublin area in 2012 were male, and 25 per cent were female.
The figures, some of which have been released before, have been compiled in a new infographic by the agency, based on data from its ‘Pathway to Home’ support system.
“It’s the first time we’re able to see trends in the system, and we’re working on producing a new set of stats every quarter from now on,” DRHE spokesperson Sorcha Donohoe told TheJournal.ie.
Launched in 2009, Pathway to Home was developed to help deliver more effective homeless services across Dublin. Figures from organisations like The Peter McVerry Trust, Focus Ireland and the Simon Community all feed into the system, along with data from council services.
Francis Doherty of the Peter McVerry Trust says infographics can be a helpful way to raise awareness of the issue as “they give an indication of the scale of the problem without people having to read through a long report.”
“It’s also a way of highlighting the problem without relying on stereotypical imagery of people sleeping in doorways and so on – we don’t use those sorts of images because of our ethos of respect for the individual.”
