Molly Malone, Lady Grattan and Thomas Moore to be moved in coming months

Most monuments will be stored, but the popular tourist attraction will cry cockles and mussels from St Andrew Street.

SOME OF THE capital’s most well-known statues will be moved over the next six months to make way for the new Luas cross-city connection.

Dublin’s most famous street-trader will take her cockles and mussels from Grafton Street to the nearby Fáilte Ireland offices on St Andrew Street.

While Molly Malone will continue to wheel her wheelbarrow through Dublin’s streets, other monuments will be moved to storage units for the duration of the works.

The Lady Grattan fountain, donated to the city by Henry Grattan’s daughter-in-law in 1880, will be moved from Stephen’s Green to a storage facility.

The more modern Steine Sculpture, which was erected on D’Olier Street in 1986 and four stone bollards at O’Connell Street will also be moved.

The Grattan and Steine monuments, as well as the bollards, will be moved in the coming months, with SIAC construction awarded the contract to handle the removal and care of the statues.

The statue of lyricist Thomas Moore will, along with Molly Malone, be moved in 2014.

The RPA says that it “will work closely with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dublin City Council, the National Museum of Ireland and the Office of Public Works throughout the heritage works.”

I’d say the fella who camps in front of the Molly Malone statue with his dancing leprechauns is absolutely livid.

I saw the fella once with his head off… he looks like a Russian war criminal, like an ugly Ivan Drago. I don’t believe he speaks English, that is why he keeps silent and waves. Still, got to hand it to him he knows how to make loads of tourists.

Agreed Jason! You have to question people’s mental health when they insist on inserting political remarks and snarls into every single story, whether its about a statue, the zoo or anything else.

Anybody who’s that wound up 24/7 needs to relax a bit and realise there’s a thing in life called smiling!

On 06.08.10 I took my niece and nephew to do “the Dublin thing” a group of buskers sat at her feet and tourists were not able to take photos of them and Molly on their own. They were politely asked by another tourist to move but they declined

Daniel, what Brian is pointing out is the fact that the buskers wouldn’t allow them to take a picture of themselves with the statue (without the buskers being in the picture), not that the buskers wouldn’t let them take a picture of them.

Yes,Daniel but the point is if you want a photo of a world famous statue you want to photograph the statue and not have a bunch of people you’ve never met in your life in the picture. If you live in Dublin you can usually find a time when there are few people around but tourists are usually on limited time so a bit of courtesy from people wouldn’t go amiss.

What an odd comment. Who cares what happens in any place in Ireland as most Irish people live outside it?
Less Irish people live outside of Dublin than any other city and it is the geographic and administrative capital.

    Tony

Its that kind of attitude that has Leinster House the way it is.

As the majority of politicians are from outside Dublin and the majority of the population are outisde Dublin and so elect them then Dublin can not be blamed for what goes on inside Leinster House which is in Dublin.

Maybe if people ourside Dublin elected people not on their ability to fix potholes or winning county championships 20 years ago or because they were Mammys teacher 40 years ago, but on their ability to Govern for the betterment of the majority Ireland would be a better place.

God knows Dublin has its own bad history of voting in these types of bad politicians.

Unlike “petrified dinosaurs”, you can’t get a statue drunk & get them to vote the way you want them too.
