Bus Eireann workers during their strike in May Sam Boal/Photocall Ireland

Bus Eireann strike accounted for over 90 per cent of industrial action days lost so far this year

The country is on course to surpass last year’s 7,900 days lost to industrial action, with both state bus companies accounting for the vast majority of lost days.

THERE WERE JUST five industrial disputes in the first six months of the year, but the Bus Eireann strikes meant that there was over 3,600 days lost by striking workers.

Officially, figures from the Central Statistics Office count 2,390 staff as being involved in the dispute, losing a collective 3,386 working days.

That is less than half the number of days lost in the first half of last year, when Bord na Móna workers went on strike twice in June. That accounted for 6,114 of 7,900 days lost in the first half of 2012.

There were 112 staff involved at two industrial disputes at the Shanganagh waste water treatment plant and the Roadstone Wood quarry in Fortunestown, both in Dublin.

In Roadstone, 100 staff lost 83 days, while 12 staff lost 26 days in Shanganagh.

Six staff lost five days in Kells Credit Union.

Although the figures put the country on course to avoid a rise on last year’s 8,486 days lost, they do not count last month’s Dublin Bus strike, which saw nearly 3,000 staff strike for three days.

Its truly ironic that 90 pc of all strikes are by the protected public service employees working for a state monopoly company, maybe when you know you cant be fired there is an added incentive.

Its truly ironic that most people on here are so selfish and me feinn and have the gaul to biotch and moan about others but probably wouldn’t scratch there left one themselves.

I am in the private sector and totally back the public sector in there fight against a FG lead government of destruction.

Dont forget in the boom times nobody wanted a public sector job or semi state becuase in the private sector you could make a fortune. Now that the private is washed up the private sector greedy dogs are giving the public sector grief.

The public sector has the support of one private sector person at least.

If Leo gets his way some of his very close associates that happen to be involved with private bus companys will be very happy. Dublin bus isnt to make a profit. Its there and always was there to profide a service.
