The latest incident took place late last night in an isolated part of a central upmarket district of Mumbai where the 23-year-old woman was doing a magazine story on old buildings in the area with a male colleague, a police officer told AFP.
“The men beat up the man, tied him up and raped the woman in a secluded part of the Shakti Mills area,” the officer said, requesting anonymity.
The woman is undergoing treatment at a city hospital and has identified two of the accused by their first names, which she heard them calling each other, police said.
Hospital officials were not immediately available for comment, but preliminary reports suggested the victim sustained multiple internal injuries, the police officer added.
In December, a 23-year-old woman was savagely attacked and gang-raped by five men in a moving bus in New Delhi, and later died from her injuries.
Her male companion was also beaten.
“A case has been registered but no arrests have been made. Several suspects were pulled up for interrogation,” the officer said.
The latest incident comes as a shock to many in Mumbai, which is considered one of India’s safest cities for women.
A trial is under way in the New Delhi case, which sparked massive protests and led to a new, tougher anti-rape law.

@dingdong. It seems to be way more prevalent in some cultures over others. Cultures that don’t respect women seem to have higher incidents of rape. In Scandinavian countries, the number if rapes have increased hugely, along with the increase in immigrants from women hating cultures, most of the reported victims being non immigrant women. I say reported because no doubt immigrant women aren’t allowed to go to the police when raped. They get sorted within the family. It’s an ‘honour” thing.
Not to mention all the poor vulnerable white girls targeted by Pakistani gangs. That’s not a cultural thing?
@margaret I agree on what you said, especially the Increase in Scandinavian countries, I believe in 2010 there was at least 5 rapes a day reported in sweden. Now what you said mostly ties to a particular religion than a culture. Honor killings and things of that nature and widley practiced in Islam, though some other religions have done it as well. The majority religion in India is Hinduism and that’s not the only religion in India. The main cause for these rapes are lack of education, poverty. I’m in no way justifying these actions, but in the last few months, efforts have be made to greatly reduce rapes as well as increase awareness of it. Which is why you are hearing more reports, It’s a huge country and it’s got a long way to go. But they are doing it, savages exists everywhere.

- the number of rapes are big in Sweden because of the way Swedish law requires them to be reported.
In Ireland, and all other European countries, if a man rapes a woman 20 times, only one case of rape is recorded and prosecuted.
In Sweden, each time he raped would be recorded as a separate rape, so he would face 20 rape charges when the case was brought before the court.
That is better practice and the Swedish authorities should be applauded for it.
Something we should all learn from and follow.
Your right the number of rapes in Oslo has increased alot . 2 attacks last weekend alone one girl got attacked after she had taken a taxi home and the taxi had driven away , so even after she had done the sensible thing she still got targeted . Sickening behaviour
@dingdong. Ad you say povety and lack of education can be a cause of rape but firstly and foremost, rapists rape because they see women as either wife material or meat. A particular disposition that seems to occur more often in certain cultures.
Rapists rape because they are savages, there is no denying in that and I agree with what you said. I didn’t say poverty and lack education is the main reason, how ever it does come into play. Quality of life does have an effect on it. For eg: the Scandinavian countries before their economic boom and high quality of life, had severe rape problems. Keep in mind this was ages ago!.

Yeah, sorry I don’t mean everyone in the entire country. I mean the society, the culture. This is obviously a not-uncommon thing in India. You have to question the culture and values of a nation when this stuff happens so often. I know we have our own rape stats to deal with but the predatory group-think that goes on over there is frightening.

Are the number of rape cases increasing in India or is it just that they are being reported now. It is tragic was this young woman has had to go through at the hands of a bunch of wild animals. Hopefully the physical injuries will heal and that the mental injuries may ease with time.

one of the many reasons for this escalation in these crimes is that the indian population is reaping the consequences of decades of sex-selection, the practice of female infanticide and preferential abortion of girls. it is estimated that there are between 10 and 50 million missing girls in india. many men now find it impossible to find a wife as a result, and these rapes are one consequence- note they are gang events, not individual predators. it shows the level of desperation. the real crime against women in india is the 50 million missing women who never got a chance for life at all.
Sorry but rape is not a response to ‘desperation’ but a deliberate act perpetrated by physically superior person to humiliate and subjugate the victim.
totally agree with you Susanna. just trying to offer some perspective. i’ve been to india twice now and i find the country a very difficult place to go to. the poverty, the caste system the corruption. life really is cheap in India. people living under elevated roads with literally the clothes on their back and nothing else.
their attitude to life is so different, but finally, the women of India are standing up and saying no more. perhaps there is hope even in the most hopeless of places.

Lloyd, I don’t know if there could be a link but I seen a BBC documentary recently about Iran, where women are currently fighting for rights, groups of men ‘intimidate’ women during and after pro feminist protests. This is done in gangs and is supported by military generals. Though, India is much more progressive and open to women’s rights, so I don’t know. It’s really bad.
What are the Indian authorities doing about it ? When one of their nationals dies here due to a medical problem they’re quick enough to get involved and condemn they way our medical system operates yet they seem very quite when thier own country men rape young women and girls and you dont see their ambassadors having their say about that, like he did here! They are nothing but animals who did this and deserve the worst punishment imagable!
With such a massive population in India one has to wonder the chances of being caught, and if this is in itself a factor in rapes? But the article does claim Mumbai to be one of the safest city’s in the world and it happened in an “upmarket district”. Hopefully that will increase the chances of finding them.
