Talk about padding the article. So what you have here is…
Two Gardai arrested for fraud this morning….
Being held in Leixlip Garda station…
We don’t know the full details yet…

I agree with that of course but his bill which called for independent oversight was voted down. Independent oversight would reduce corruption which is key in majority of police forces across the world. No need to spin my word or judge Wallace who cares who brings it in the bill makes perfect sense and there are no arguments against it.

I would say it is not an enviable task to administer justice and work in an area of ‘preventing and detecting’ crime in an Ireland and an Irish society such as the one we live in today where it seems the core organs of the state are inherently corrupt. I am referring to previous and successive governments which have proven time and again to have engaged in corrupt practice which has essentially left our country bankrupt. I can only imagine that police officers would be even more aware of this and could lead to a ‘if you can’t beat them join them’ attitude which is human behaviour and no oaths, job description or anything else would deter that.

You’re right Niall. The problem is this and previous Governments have hacked peoples living standards to shreds consequently people including cops do things that they wouldn’t normally do to ease their lives.
In 1992 (I think) the then English Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigal Lawson said that “unemployment was the price for keeping inflation down. And it was a price worth paying” And in there is the nub of all our problems.
Our Government and I include FF in this have bowed the knee to the Germans to accommodate their fear of inflation and as a result WE are suffering and paying the price with deflation!
And that is one of the reasons why people including Police, Doctors, Builders, Employed, Unemployed, Retired, Disabled and the Young are all doing whatever they can in an effort to make life bearable. Sadly some even take their own lives to escape the pain.
So instead of us doing what our cruel and callous Government want us to do, fight with each other we should stand together and try to find a peaceful way to take back OUR COUNTRY from those who are destroying it and us.
So please people lets stop bashing the cops and each other.

Okay, I’m going to wade into this cesspool of ignorance for a moment even though I feel I’d probably have more luck teaching my dog algebra than trying to promote a somewhat reasonable discussion in the comments section of The Journal.
Could somebody please explain to me why they are against creating a better system of accountability for An Garda Siochana? Accountability promotes transparency, transparency promotes trust. Those guilty of corruption have a greater chance of being held accountable and the general populace have more faith in those who are policing their communities.
Before the name calling and personal attacks against me commence I’d also like to point out that asking for a more accountable police force is not an attack on every member of said force.

I don’t see a problem with an accountable police force. To be honest I think An Garda Siochana is very accountable as is.
The problem people on this site seem to have is that when a member of An Garda Siochana is accused of something we don’t execute them immediately. A lot commenting here forget that just like anybody accused of criminality they are entitled to due process also they are innocent until proven guilty.

Of course, nobody who is innocent should suffer the indignity of being labelled guilty. Many of the posts here are ridiculous and should be dismissed as such. I don’t really agree that An Garda Siochana is very accountable as is.
I’m happy to have my views on Garda accountability challenged and I am willing to change them if people can explain to me how they believe the current system is adequate. Perhaps there are Gardai here who had a part in GSOC investigations who are more aware of the inner workings of both organisations than I am. I know I’m approaching the issue from a position of relative ignorance but I only have access to information that’s in the public domain.
Personally, I don’t believe the GSOC can adequately do the job it is tasked with doing. They do their best with the resources at their disposal. On several occasions they have been forced to resort to complaining in the media about Garda non cooperation with investigations in the vain hope that they can shame people into action. This exacerbates an already unhealthy relationship between Garda heirarchy and the the body tasked with promoting police accountability and investigating complaints. There doesn’t seem to be adequate protection of Gardai who report colleagues who are engaged in corrupt activities. This is especially worrying when you consider that in order to have an accountable police force you need to have people within the force who are willing to draw attention to corrupt practices. How can we expect Gardai to report instances of abuse if doing so could damage their chances of promotion or result in them being isolated and excluded by their colleagues? I honestly believe that the vast majority of An Garda Siochana is made up of good people, we should be making it easier for these people to report abuses of power instead we seem determined to make it as difficult as possible. Look what happened to the Sergeant who brought attention to the penalty points scandal.
I’m happy to admit every experience I have had with the Gardai has been pleasant. On the rare occasion when I have been stopped at a check point or bagged driving home from work they have always been professional. I don’t have an axe to grind and I’m merely basing my opinion on what I have read and what I believe to be common sense.

I agree but not because they are guards but because of our insignificant judicial system which sees taxpayer money squandered making example out of minor offences and effectively allowing serious crime go unpunished. The penalties for crime need to far exceed the crime as a deterrent… I.e how many people would drink drive if it was a 30,000 fine? Noone!
