New stamp to mark the anniversary of the 1913 Lockout featuring Jim Larkin. An Post

An Post launch three stamps to mark 1913 Lockout centenary

James Connolly, Constance Markiewicz and Jim Larkin feature on the new stamps launched today.

THREE STAMPS FEATURING prominent trade union figures, James Connolly, Constance Markiewicz and Jim Larkin were launched today to mark the 1913 Lockout centenary.

The stamps feature photographs from the ‘Darkest Dublin’ photographic collection.

The James Connolly stamp has the first ITGWU head quarters building in the background, while the Constance Markiewicz stamp is set against a photograph of children outside tenement buildings in Chancery Lane (now Bride Street).

Jim Larkin

The Irish trade union leader, Jim Larkin is set against a photograph of the Bloody Sunday riot which took place in O’Connell Street just outside the GPO. The riot was sparked when James Larkin was arrested at the Imperial Hotel on Sackville Street (now known as O’Connell Street).

The stamps were designed and produced by Irish designer Ger Garland.

The launch took place today at the GPO by Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte, the General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions David Begg and the President of SIPTU, Jack O’Connor.

Speaking at the launch Minister Rabbitte said the stamps “will raise awareness locally, nationally and internationally of an event of considerable economic and political significance.  He said he was sure An Post would be  producing many more commemoration stamps:

I have no doubt but that we have more to look forward to in this decade of commemorations.

David Begg, General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions said he thought the stamps “capture pictorially the difficult day-to-day experiences of ordinary workers and their families at that time and their heroic determination to achieve decent treatment and fairness at work and, ultimately, radical social change and advancement”.

He added:

Critical to events of one hundred years ago was the right of workers to organise and to collectively bargain – an issue that has yet to be resolved, along with the timeless pursuit of decent work.

So I’ll be the one to say it: I wonder what these passionate leaders would make of the crop of leaders Ireland elected since the early 80′s to now, eh!?

Whatever about what they would think of them, I would doubt that they would sit around on their couches watching tv whilst whining about “the politicians”. . Whatever happened this country?

All three were born in Britain, so maybe we need some sons and daughters of recent Irish emigrants to return with passion in their bellies to change the stagnant political establishment

    Have to agree with Jonny
I guess back in the day people had to actually leave their house and engage in something active in order to get there opinions heard. But now I think many (but certainly not all) people just leave an angry comment on a forum or type an unread diatribe in a blog and they feel they’ve done their bit, even though it amounts to nothing.

Delighted to see the Countess Markievicz stamp. The photo in the background was taken in 1911 and features my Great-Great Grandfather, George Slicker. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Wood_Quay/Chancery_Lane/1340963/

Chancery Lane is still there, incorrectly identified as Bride Street in the article above and a few other places. The photo is owned by the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland

I wonder what those leaders would make of the likes of Rabbitte? A bit of an insult to them to have a so called labour member like him at the launch.

back before FF became a party solely for fools, thieves and criminals. It is an insult to her memory that you try to associate this honest, decent woman with modern Fianna Fáil. A party whose policies and methods were against everything she fought for from 1916 on.

This Irish hero has nothing to do with the party that ruined this country.
She fought to save Irish children not export them as soon as they were old enough.
Next someone will be on here saying that Gilmore and rabbitte are carrying on where Connolly left off.
Please don’t slur the memory of Irish Hero’s who gave their life for the betterment of the Irish people with the current crop on pocketliners who rape our country each and every day

Sigh, two more terrorists and supporters of violence for the State to commemorate some more, how predictably Irish. It is too much for us to actually consider people like David Norris or Katherine Zappone who campaigned for love???
