Large scale search off Howth Head stood down due to fading light

An angler reported seeing a person in the water earlier this evening. A multi-craft rescue effort was launched, but later called off for the evening.

A SEARCH AND rescue effort off Dublin’s Howth Head has been called off for the night because of fading light.

The operation, which involved local RNLI and Coast Guard crews along with the Rescue 116 helicopter, began shortly after 5.30pm; the alarm was raised by an an angler fishing off rocks near Balscadden Road, to the east of the harbour. He called the RNLI lifeboat station on the Middle Pier reporting a “person in the water”.

RTÉ reports that a man fell overboard from a small fishing vessel.

The RNLI inshore lifeboat, and then the all-weather lifeboat, were deployed to search in the area, before being joined in the effort later by the Howth Coast Guard, a spokesperson for the RNLI confirmed to TheJournal.ie this evening.

The Rescue 116 helicopter was also tasked to the scene from its base at Dublin Airport.

After a search of the area lasting over two and a half hours that yielded no trace of the person, a decision was made to stand the operation down for the night.

    Not surprising. Tescos are making a fortune here.

    ‘Treasure Island’ is what Tescos called Ireland some years back. Making an absolute mint here with their astronomical prices.

    @S: they’re not charging any more than any of their rivals. Best best is to shop around them all for the best value.

    The large supermarkets are slowly forming a cartel, the discount stores included. They are all about price matching not price beating. Very little difference between any of them.

    @Sean Higgins:

    Yeah I only said that last night. They should be beating them and not matching them. The same with Harvey Norman with their ads saying they’ll match but if they couldn’t beat in the first place then I’d prefer to buy whatever it was at the original lower price with who offered it.

    Anyone else notice the obvious price differences for the same items between their Express and bigger stores? I wonder if it’s the same in the UK.

    @Simon Eales: Yes. Can confirm. Tesco express and others express stores always charge more. I assumed they were franchises.

    @Simon Eales: Kinda makes sense cause isn’t Tesco Express just a glorified centra? It’s just a convenience store.
