THE PSNI IS to undertake ‘protective policing’ at a number of schools in North Belfast today due to loyalist threats.
Yesterday, the PSNI said that a threat had been made through a third party on Friday 6 September in relation to a number of schools in the north of the city.
The Irish News reports today that the threat comes from the Red Hand Defenders, which identified two primary schools and one secondary school in a phone call to the newspaper.
It added that the group threatened “military action”.
The PSNI said today that investigations into the threat are ongoing, and “at this stage there is no evidence to corroborate the threat”.
Police are committed to protecting all communities in North Belfast and we would encourage all community leaders and those in positions of influence to play an active role in diffusing tension and maintaining calm.
The PSNI said it has agreed with school principals “the nature of the protective policing that will be delivered in North Belfast on the morning of Monday 9 September”.
The action “will be proportionate to the environment encountered”, it said.
The Red Hand Defenders issued their threat in response to “attacks on the Protestant, unionist and loyalist community in recent months”, said the Irish News.
Pupils are being encouraged to attend school accompanied by parents and guardians.

What utter filth! It reminds me of the time the Catholic children were being abused on their way to school because they HAD to walk through a Protestant area to get there. It was about 10 years ago and some of the most upsetting images I have seen on TV. What is wrong with these people? Children are innocents…

They have even been known to engage in secret military acts of colouring in and learning spellings.

My heart goes out to those parents. I honestly don’t think I’d have the courage to bring my kids to school under those circumstances.

A true comment. At the heart of Unionism is a hatred for all things Irish or Catholic, a hatred of other cultures and ethnic groups bar their own.

Well particularly Ulster Loyalism since its based off an ethnic/religious ideology. Unionism would just be a belief in the Union; but Unionism in NI is obviously dominated by anti-Irish/anti-Catholic lunatics. Ex. the Scottish Catholic Church is against Scottish Independence along with well-known Scottish Catholics. But there’s no question Ulster Loyalism is a very evil/sick ideology. Threatening primary children is nothing new; I’m surprised they aren’t taking military action out the maternity section of the hospital.

This is awful. However while this is outrageous and appalling, does anyone know what the other half are doing? Are the republicans being angels and toeing the line?
We can’t latch onto the loyalists alone, we need to know what both sides are doing. That way neither side feels left out of the condemnation of their behaviour.
However we forget one last group, that’s made up of 90% of the population of the north. The group that are normal decent hard working people who get caught in the middle and tarred with one brush.

The children are walking through a Unionist area on the way to the school that was the reason that the caller gave and the comments backing it online go along on the same vein.
Seanie,I think that was just Holy Cross Primary. As far as I know,the reasons given for this were because loyalists have been attacked recently and this would be a form of retaliation. Not about the location at all this time.

I have always said it, the loyalist People on our Island have been let down by there Political Representatives, they trail behind the Nationalist / Republican Community in regards to education & job opportunities – they have been told for too long that they are the top dogs, yet they have the highest unemployment rate on the island in there community. I hope that they wake up to this soon!
So what, the north is on a different planet.
Lived through this in the 80′s and thought it was normal life…..all this serves is as a recruitment tool to the republican splinter groups springing up all over the place. My children live in relative peace, lets keep it that way. The more publicity these dinosaurs get the more they feel justified to continue with their mindless antics.
