The army bomb disposal team were called to the scene after the discovery of an improvised explosive device at a graveyard in north Dublin.

THE ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL Team have carried out a controlled explosion on an improvised explosive device (IED) found in Fingal Cemetary in Balgriffin north Dublin.

The Defence Forces confirmed that the Army Bomb Disposal Team were called to a cemetery on the Malahide – Baldoyle Road when Gardaí alerted them to the discovery of a suspect device.

A commemoration for the murdered Real IRA boss Alan Ryan was held at the cemetery at the weekend but it is not believed that the pipe bomb was found near Ryan’s grave.

The team arrive at the scene at 2.20 pm this afternoon and a cordon and traffic restrictions were put in place for public safety.

The device was then taken to an open green area nearby and made safe by a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 3.50 pm.

There were no graves or gravestones damaged in the course of this operation according to authorities.
