Sunday Mirror publisher faces phone-hacking probe

The publisher said its subsidiary group does not accept wrongdoing within its business and takes the allegations very seriously.

THE PUBLISHER OF Britain’s Sunday Mirror newspaper said that it is being investigated for alleged phone-hacking by former staff.

Trinity Mirror said police were examining whether its subsidiary MGN Limited, which publishes its five national newspapers, could be held criminally liable over allegations that Sunday Mirror journalists illegally accessed celebrities’ voicemail messages.

“The group does not accept wrongdoing within its business and takes these allegations seriously,” a Trinity Mirror spokesman said.

The police investigation is at a “very early stage”, he added.

With a circulation of over one million, the celebrity-heavy Sunday Mirror is the weekly sister newspaper of the left-leaning Daily Mirror tabloid.

News of the World hacking

The Sunday Mirror’s rival the News of the World, owned by Rupert Murdoch, was engulfed in 2011 by revelations that its journalists had hacked the phone of a murdered schoolgirl as well as hundreds of celebrities and public figures.

Murdoch was forced to close down the 168-year-old newspaper in July 2011 following a huge public outcry.

Dan Evans, a former journalist with both the Sunday Mirror and the News of the World, is among 16 people who have been charged over alleged phone-hacking.

Four Trinity Mirror journalists were arrested over suspected phone-hacking in March, including former Sunday Mirror editor Tina Weaver. All four were released on bail.

Trinity Mirror publishes more than a hundred regional titles in Britain and two Scottish newspapers as well as the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

Arrests

More than a hundred people have been arrested under three police probes launched in the wake of the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.

The scandal also sparked a judicial inquiry into the ethics of the famously raucous British press, which recommended an overhaul of the newspapers’ system of self-regulation.

God forbid anyone would dare mention the fact that the British sat back and watched as 1 Irish million starved to death unecessarily. There are actually people in this country who defend the actions of British yet will codemn and vilify any republican action. The Palestinians are just as barbaric as the Israelis yet their use of savage acts like suicide bombings of children on school buses are defended.

Just a little History lesson for you there! De Clerk was not president at that time Botha was. De Clerk was the man that actually started the talks with the ANC and Mandela. If De Clerk didn’t start the talks, South Africa would either kept on going the way they were or a Civil war would have broken out and Mandela would more than likely still be in jail.
The abolition of Apartheid had already started in the early 1980′s.

I forgot it was Botha was President, Stanley. He was extremely hardline. There was no Sky till 1990 so most of the news up till then was from RTÉ, BBC and UTV in these islands. I’m sure there was a great deal of talking done in private before Mr Mandela was released, same as all the early talks to resolve the conflict in Northern Ireland. Sure, even Thatcher’s government were in talks about the North even while she was still taking a hardline attitude in public.

True, Stanley. Apartheid was pretty much dead by 1985 and was just awaiting burial. The transition of power ended up being relatively smooth and peaceful, which it wouldn’t have been if a lot of international radicals had got their way and it completely vindicated Thatcher’s view that increasing isolation of the country would only entrench attitudes and make the government more extremist. As it was, sanctions only had the effect of making South Africa virtually self-sufficient.

The same people who supported them were totally against sanctions on Iraq and Iran, so make of that what you will.

That’s why Mandela was so important, he gave everybody hope that the country could really be fixed and that everybody was part of the ‘rainbow’. Without him and de Klerk, there would never have been a referendum that saw 70% of white South Africans vote their country out of existence.

    Pat,

Thanks for that article. Irish opposition to the 1970 Springbok Rugby tour was highly significant in bringing widespread public attention to the evil of apartheid in South Africa. It influenced many people who later became influential in Irish public life. Kader Asmal’s ecumenical and broad approach to gaining and accepting support from all the major political parties, churches, trade unions and student unions was very successful. The focus on civil rights in Ireland – North and South- in Ireland in the early seventies helped Irish people to see the parallels between the situation in Ireland and the situation in South Africa. Kader Asmal was a remarkable man ably supported by his wife Louise. Trinity College Dublin became the first university in Ireland and Britain to sell its investments in companies with significant operations in South Africa largely due to Kader’s influence and the respect with which he was held within TCD. I proposed the motion as the President of the Students Representative Council in 1972/73.

Lots of people have been murdered in South Africa since the end of apartheid, but racist murders make up only a small number of them. It’s fair to question Mandela’s record as an administrator, but he could never be accused of stoking racial tension. Quite the opposite.

The membership of that anti genocide group would also not be from the more formidable and unbiased organisations in the world. That aside the article states that their is an incitement to black on white violence, at no stage does it attribute the 68000 whites killed to them being murdered by blacks. They through it out there to create a link in the minds of people reading the article. And like a good little fishy you bit.

It is a huge story, Mary – over there. Not anywhere else, we’re talking about a demographic that became disliked for a long time. We’re not talking about AWB thugs here, they’re mostly older farmers, men and women who undergo ritualistic tortures before being murdered, and often robbery is not the main motivation. Some of the stories are too sick to even link to here, but they are easy to find.

I don’t like to be cynical but a lot of people who were really interested in what was happening in South Africa in the 80s have mostly moved onto the next cause and aren’t really interested in what became of the country. Possibly a bigger story are the farm “redistributions” which have resulted in little success but plenty of problems including SA becoming a net importer of food for the first time in its history in 2009. It’s not quite Zimbabwe in its proportions but it could get there if the wrong people get into power.

Ronan, sorry for the misread. The deaths are horrendous and are often dismissed as revenge attacks for past injustices, even though a lot of the murderers are too young to remember Apartheid. It’s probably why I get angry with privileged Westerners who say that poverty creates violence, such words totally justify such barbarity in the minds of those who perpetrate it. The interviews with some of the criminals are really fascinating to watch.

Ronan, many websites do print these “facts”. The American Free Press? Run by people to the right of Fox News? The website of Orly Taitz – a leading proponent of Obama not being an American by birth? Before it’s news – where anyone can post anything without facts of editorial control? Sorry, but I like facts from more credible news sources

There is no reliable information. The fact is, we don’t know what the numbers are, and the confusion arises for two reasons. First, there was an issue with the SAP not recording certain crime stats after, I think, 2008, but more importantly some of the discrepancies arise from how different crimes are recorded. In the UK, a murder is only recorded as a murder once someone is convicted, in the USA, once there’s a body found in suspicious circumstances, it’s a murder. I don’t know how SA does it but it can account for the wide disparity between the competing claims.
Anyway, all that aside, being slightly less likely to be murdered than another ethnic group in your country is not exactly comforting. But being targeted because of your skin colour is disturbing isn’t it?

I worked for Dunnes at the time and this became a very emotional subject.
All other shop workers and all other supermarkets other than the Henry Street staff had no problem handling South African produce

The companies line was that they also had no problem in not stocking South African produce but as this was a political issue it was up to the Government to ban the produce and make it a level playing field for all
It took the Government years to do this
Meanwhile South African produce was been sold by all other supermarkets up and down the country and been eaten in most homes …
Incidentally a friend of mine who was 22yrs of age was followed home from work one night and had his face slashed open by one of the many hangers on who joined this protest

Two sides to all stories !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I clearly remember that Outspan oranges were being rejected. All they did in South African was label them as produce of Israel and the very same oranges were sold in Dunnes.
By the way all the best produce gets shipped to Europe and South Africans get 3rd grade produce.
Now where is the justice in that!!!!

The Dunnes strike was one of the first cases of sanctions and it was led by the strikers, who merely followed a union mandate. In fairness to your current President, if my memory serves me right he was one of the few politicians who supported the strikers. Dunnes precipitated the action by forcing Mary Manning to handle the goods, the customer she was serving put the oranges back as she didn’t want to buy South African, but Dunnes suspended Mary Manning anyway.
