This nearly 30-year-old car is set to replace the Popemobile*

*Well, the Pope will drive it around the Vatican, at least.

REPLACING AN ICONIC car is no mean feat, just ask the makers of Batman movies.

However, Pope Francis has found a successor to the Popemobile and plans to drive it himself.

A priest from northern Italy has given the pontiff a 1984 Renault 4, which the Pope plans to drive around the Vatican.

Vatican spokesman, the Reverend Ciro Benedettini, says the four-door car, which is conveniently painted in papal white, is manual transmission and has a new engine fitted.

Benedettini told The Associated Press on Wednesday: “The pope intends to drive it.”

The donor, a 69-year-old Reverend Renzo Zocca, says he took Francis for a short drive in the car at the Vatican on Saturday and that Francis told him he knows how to drive it.

Zocca said he thinks Francis will use it for short commutes on Vatican grounds.

Associated Press contributed additional reporting.

Some of his PR stunts I get, it boosts his popularity when he has a ‘man of the people’ moment – this just seems odd, he has landed himself with an old car but yet retrofitted it with a new engine?!? Why not just buy an 2001 car FFS …

This the same organisation who…when the previous pope went to London, gave confession with to four multi millionaires. Granting all four absolution for their sins and a gateway to heaven, for a small donation of £200,000 each.

I guess all that money went to the poor people right?

You sound very bitter Angela…..I’ve no time for any religion but in the case of this new fella in the Vatican is making waves….He has no time for all the opulent trappings of the papacy. I do believe there are genuinely good people who are religious and I think he is one of them, give credit where credit is due……all the boys on red frocks will be wondering what the did when they elected him……if he isn’t bumped off I think he will continue to ruffle feathers and make significant changes…..tiny steps etc etc…

Look Angela, all I’m saying is that (in my humble opinion) I think he is ‘trying to lead by example’…..this is a first from the Vatican, among the faithful this is unheard of behaviour. I’m an aethist and despise what the RCC and some other Christian churches are responsible for, but, they are not all nocturnal peadofiles lurking behind pillers in the church waiting for some innocent 8 year old to pass to lure in with a lollipops. Many men and women dedicate their lives to helping others. The fact that they do this in the name of some god is a matter for themselves but doesn’t diminish the fact that they do many selfless act for the benefit of others. That’s all, what you take out of it is up to you…..but you do come across as a very bitter and/or angry woman…..you may have your reasons but that doesn’t change the facts……. As I see them.

It’s about time the pope is starting to get the message that sitting on tons of money is not Christ-like. So I say, good on him but still a long way to go yet
