169 jobs on the line as liquidator appointed to Limerick jewellery company

A liquidator has been appointed to Andersen Ireland after financial losses at the company.

ALMOST 170 JOBS are on the line at jewellery manufacturer Andersen Ireland in Limerick after a liquidator was appointed to the company today.

The move is expected to result in a wind-up of the custom jewellery company, located in Rathkeale.

The liquidator from KPMG, who was appointed by the High Court at the request of the company, is expected to see if any parts of the business can be saved.

Andersen Ireland makes costume jewellery and accessories. Staff had already been placed on a three-day week prior to the decision to shut the factory earlier this month.

The parent firm had said at the time that a liquidator would be appointed on 23 September 2013.

The timing of the decision took some by surprise.

SIPTU, which represents some of the workers, questioned why the company had sought the liquidator ahead of a creditors meeting planned for next week.

“This act by the company could well eliminate the possibility of finding new owners for the business and the possibility of maintaining jobs,” said organiser Denis Gormalley.

SIPTU suggested that Ulster Bank, which is the biggest business creditor of the company, could step in to prevent the liquidation of the company’s assets and have a receiver appointed instead, averting the job losses.

I’m at Andersen Ireland for 19 years. Heart broken at losing a whole ‘family’. It is Limerick getting a battering and Rathkeale getting hammered. Our Government are a disgrace letting foreign companies in and bringing their own laws with them, and leaving us Irish citizens with not a leg to stand on on. Screwed again and again… Where Does it end???

No need for concern. good news from Enda Kenny.Suntan lotion at the ready, beach towels and togs out, kids in the back of the car and off we go. Urging Irish people to “stick with” the economic challenges of austerity and the bailout programme, he said exiting the programme will ‘bring back the sunshine to people’s lives’.

The owners of the company and Ulster Bank should be ashamed of them selves for the destruction of these jobs and the effects on the workers families and impact on the local community. People should contact Ulster Bank and get them to appoint a receiver. Many of the jobs have a good prospect of being saved if Ulster Bank act swiftly. It’s not too late yet. KPMG have a lot to answer too. Save jobs now!!!

Sad but costume jewellery cannot be made profitably in Ireland due to our high labour costs.

The minimum wage in Spain is €5 per hour.

We are not at the races!

Sympathies to staff who will be made redundant.

All low cost products are now being made in China at very low labour costs!

We must live in the real work.

Benchmarking in Ireland was the biggest mistake since the foundation of the State!

    Shame on Fianna Fáil.
