ASTI reject Haddington Road agreement, vote for industrial action

The union representing 17,000 secondary teachers voted by way of a 63 per cent majority to reject the deal.

THE UNION REPRESENTING second-level teachers has voted to reject the Haddington Road agreement and in favour of industrial action.

In a ballot of its 17,000 members, the ASTI rejected the Government’s public pay proposals by 63 per cent to 37 per cent.

In a simultaneous ballot, ASTI members voted by 65 per cent to 35 per cent in favour of industrial action, up to and including strike action.

Speaking following the outcome of the ballot today ASTI general secretary Pat King said that teachers are sending the message that “they have given enough”:

The Haddington Road Agreement is a step too far. Second-level schools are at the tipping point, having been stripped of key supports and personnel. Young people’s education has been diminished and their futures compromised.

A second teaching union, the TUI, has also balloted its members on the Haddington Road agreement.

The ASTI’s committee will meet on Monday to discuss the outcome of the ballot.

Great! And a lovely country to visit. When i was younger I bused from Dubrovik to Venice for 3 weeks with the odd ferry trip thrown in. Highlights were the pig on a spit, fruity brandies the hilltop town of motovun and the plitvic lakes.

@François Pignon: In 1988 when I finished working in BMW for the summer I coached it down to a lovely town called Porec, 11 hour trip, got off for a breather some ways down but then slowly realised the coach had left without us, the taxi driver was delighted with the 200 Rothmans I gave him to catch it!

Watch their prices shoot up. The euro in Spain was worth 166 pesetas. The day before the euro came in a coffee or a small glass of beer, a caña, was 100 pesetas. The day after they were €1. We got ripped off.

Foolish move. Euro is a disaster. Almost parity with the dollar and sinking lower.
