Video: The fearlessness and friendships of the boys who jump into the Grand Canal

This is the most gorgeous 3 minutes and 30 seconds you’ll spend today. Promise.

YOU’VE PROBABLY SEEN the photographs of teenagers jumping into the water in Dublin’s inner city on sunny days.

They get flak from some people for doing it with people saying that it’s too dangerous or foolhardy to jump into the Liffey or the Grand Canal. However this gorgeous short video gives a whole other side to it.

The black and white mini-documentary – which clocks in at just over 3 minutes – shows teenagers jumping into the Grand Canal on a hot summer day (remember them?) while a man tells the story of what it meant for him and his friends to be able to do the same thing when they were young.

“There was something magic about that period,” he says. “Once you had the canal and once you had your swim and once you had your friends, you were always going to be ok”.

The piece is the first production by Motherland Films, a new Dublin company which launched today, and is probably the sweetest, saddest thing you’ll see all day.
