No further action from Central Bank over Anglo following tapes controversy

“No new issues” came to light as a result of the publication of the tapes earlier this year, according to a statement from the Central Bank this afternoon.

THE CENTRAL BANK has said it will not be making any further reports to authorities as a result of the material contained in the Anglo Tapes.

The recordings of bank executives’ phone conversations caused huge public uproar when they were published by the Irish Independent during the summer.

Amongst the many public revelations was the quote from Anglo’s then head of capital markets John Bowe which showed the institution was attempting to mislead the Central Bank in the days leading up to the bank guarantee.

Bowe was recorded as saying: “That number is seven [billion euros] but the reality is we need more than that. But you know, the strategy here is you pull them [the Central Bank] in, you get them to write a big cheque and they have to keep, they have to support their money, you know”.

In a statement this afternoon, the Central Bank says it has carried out a review of the issues raised as a result of the recordings, and decided no further action is necessary:

The tapes raised concerns that Anglo may have deliberately misrepresented its financial position when it sought financial support from the Central Bank in 2008. The Central Bank has examined Anglo’s interaction with the Central Bank at the time in relation to this matter.

The statement goes on to say that no new issues have come to light as a result of the publication of the tapes “that relate to suspected criminal offences having occurred” and that as a result “the Central Bank does not intend, and is not required, to make any further statutory reports of suspected criminal offences to An Garda Síochána or the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement in relation to this matter”.

The investigation into the toxic bank being carried out by the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation and the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE) was launched in 2009 and is ongoing.

    – Yes – disgusting and disgraceful- but what are the Irish People going to do about uit .
There is a near unending criticism of many of FF/FG /Lab actions here – and now Central bank – but what is point in complaining – if no action is taken .

So FG and FF don’t want to declare who props them up, Noonan stops the naming of account holders in Anglo and now the Central Bank tells us all to f*ck right off. Even by Irish standards, it’s been one hell of a week. And it’s only Tuesday!!

@ Maurice, the central bank is an organ of organ of the state. It’s not privately owned, it doesn’t have shareholders. What planet do you live on?

As regards our “gas and oil” reserves, you need another wake up call, we don’t have anything like the reserves you claim. Not one barrel of commercial oil has been brought ashore by any company in decades of exploration. This is a fact.

Stop reading your David Icke, Jim Corr websites, they are not reliable resources. Bet you also think the queen and Obama are really lizard people.

the conservative estimates by the oil companies themselves who were given royalty free exploration rights put the figure at €1.8 trillion, based on 1.8 billion barrels @ €100 per barrell. just because as you put it “Not one barrel of commercial oil has been brought ashore by any company in decades of exploration”, is meaningless, unless you know of one of our bent politicians who know more about oil exploration that the companies who are making billions every year excavating the oil / gas? or perhaps you know more than they do? Read the report “liquid assets” if you want to do some research instead oif guessing what to say.

In relation, surplus cash at the end of the year is divided between been sent back to the exchequer and being held onto by the central bank for it’s shareholders. So who are there shareholders? Not easy tp find out, but we know they exist. Who do you think they are? Or maybe corrie or eastenders take up too much of your time to go and find out.. Sheeple everywhere.

Any surplus by the central bank goes straight to the revenue coffers. So as you say whoever that goes to owns the bank which happens to be the Irish state.

As regards your claims about oil, wakey wakey, you obviously don’t understand a single idea about the oil and gas industry. We don’t have any viable oil reserves and only very small gas reserves. This is fact, if it wasn’t the case then why are Exxon mobile not overly enthused to the “huge free” oil reserves off our coast

What did M Harney once say? “the Electorate have a short memory” Enda will be hoping that his promise to get to the bottom of the banking crimes will be forgotten at the next election. He is now in bed with the Bankers and doing his best to ensure that all his mates get implicated. Wait a few years and we will have one scape goat in the dock who will be deemed to ill to serve time (precedent: Charlie H)

This is a very worrying development. It shows that the central bank are really running the show here. Before this crisis, the Gardai and the DPP used to decide what cases would be brought to court….this is a frightening development and an affront to our democracy.

The Central Bank IN Ireland is a foreign entity. It issues paper and electronic money and keeps a watchful eye over a zero reserve monopoly ponzi economy.

It’s sentinel agents and staff are well paid to commit economic treason.

If it truly were our national central bank, it would implement policies in the public interest, instead it has enslaved the nation with fraudulent tricks for the enrichment of its private owners.

Donncha, your point is proven by the fact that Section 6 of the Central Bank Act 1942 requiring credit control in the public interest was revoked by Section 5 of the Central Bank Act 1998 and again reinforced by Sections 6 and 7 of the Central Bank and Financial Regulation Reform Act 2004.

This was not accidental. The Central Bank of Ireland destroyed the system of prudential control of credit so as to facilitate the massive expansion of the Irish banks and part of the collegiate system of the ESCB Statute.

As a result the financial stabiliry of the nation has been destroyed and the CBI wants the jackal or zombie banks to feed on the distressed borrowers.

Using the “bankers-developers-politicans” triad is repeating a media soundbite.
It is like says the economic collapse cause was “Lehmans”. Lehmans was the name of a bank.

Developers used (fake) money loans gifted to them ultimately by the central banks and its owners. They were not doing anything unethical or immoral in providing a service and infrastructure.

By bankers, the venom is falsely directed to the likes of Fingleton, Fitzpatrick etc who were trying to ignore the swelling ponzi scheme probably unaware of the real plan of those handing them the Irish nations workforce future.

And how many politicians truly understand the money system? One ex-Fine Gael Attorney General traitor does but few others.

The real traitors were the Central Bank chiefs who committed treason serving their international financier dynasty masters that are never to be named in mainstream media.

Executives from Anglo Irish Bank were recorded conspiring to defraud this country out of billions of euro. This they done and you say no crime was committed.

Are the Central Bank hoping that by releasing this news they will create uproar and that some one in an influential position might prejudice the upcoming court case by commenting on the case? Not like is hasn’t happened before.

I agree, how else were they to get hundreds of thousands of people jobs in construction that would provide massive tax revenue that could support huge increases in public sector salaries and welfare payments except by leveraging the banking sector until it broke. Anglo was a monster created by lack of bank regulation that destroyed the concept of prudence in banking here.
