'Don't be such an idiot': Heated exchanges over Central Bank response to Anglo Tapes

Mary Lou McDonald and Brendan Howlin clashed over the Anglo Tapes in the Dáil this morning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg9k24EZMDw

YouTube: Hugh O’Connell

THE GOVERNMENT HAS come in for strong criticism from Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald over the Central Bank’s response to the Anglo Tapes in the Dáil this morning.

During Leaders’ Questions, Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin was quizzed by McDonald about the Central Bank governor Patrick Honohan’s comments yesterday that he had not listened to all of the Anglo Tapes and the view of the bank that there are “no new issues” as a result of the tapes.

Howlin insisted that those who committed criminal offences should be held to account under the laws of the land.

But he was keen to not say anything which may threaten the forthcoming trial of former executives at the defunct Anglo Irish Bank.

He stressed: “We operate courts of law under the Constitution, not courts martial.”

McDonald said that Honohan’s remarks yesterday and the Central Bank’s view of the Anglo Tapes is “simply incredible”.

In the video above – around 20 seconds in – the Sinn Féin TD can be heard off-mic saying: “Don’t be such an idiot… and the regulator has to regulate.”

Howlin insisted: “We’re interested ensuring that the slow, painstaking, difficult task of giving every assistance to the prosecution authorities to ensure that where there is any criminality that those people are held to account.”

sorry i thought my point was fairly clear. it’s very easy to look good in opposition. F.G and Labour convinced the public during the last election. party politics and party agendas get in the way of real democracy. Party members serve their parties, and when they don’t, they are banished regardless of whether or not the peoples best interests are being served. what we need are politicians who will represent the best interests of this country and all it’s people, and your point of giving sinn fein a go ara whats the worst that can happen, is ridiculous.

But Mary-Lou doesn’t accept this. New charges can’t be created just to play to public opinion, as she seems to want.

What can we do about our current representatives?

We can decide as a nation, collectively or subconsciously, just like we did with FF in 2011, to wipe these cancerous civil war parties out once and for all. The only knowledge unborn children should have of FF, FG or Labour, is in their history books.

It’s up to this generation to make it happen. Coalitions of small parties/independents work very well in Switzerland. There is little sign of any whip system in the US where congressmen have to lobby not just opposition members, but members of their own party to support bills and legislation. This can only improve laws passed.

Compare this to our small cabal of ministers who jot their mental meanderings on the back of a fag packet and use whip and guillotine to make laws.

We can change this corrupt system. But we must all jump together

Richard I’m also sick of them. FG most of all. They rode into the 2011 GE on a great white horse, promising new politics, new democracy, smaller govt. they could have promised to take your first born and Enda would still have been Taoiseach, such was the hatred of FF.

My proposition is simple. Vote independent or small party. Once elected they are far less likely to turn their back and vote the way one man tells them. They’ll actually represent you. Now, I certainly don’t want to elect a pothole fixer. I want to be represented by an independent like Stephen Donnelly, who praises the govt when they do something right, and lambasts them when they are wrong. But he is not subject to the whip. He votes with his conscience, with the national interest in mind.

There’ll be people who will say that a government of independent and small parties is unworkable. That we need the whip to get anything done. To those people, I say go find a dictatorship to live in.

To everyone else I ask you. Is it too much of a stretch of the imagination in this Island of saints and scholars, that we cannot find 50+ genuine people to form a govt?

My fervent hope is after the next GE, the largest “party” in the Dáil will be the Independents. FG will be the junior coalition partner. And the Taoiseach will be an Independent TD.

I’ll be told to dream on. But I’m not dreaming. I’m visualizing

She can bring it up that is her right but she need’s to stop pushing the issue the way she is doing. In fact the best thing the entire government can do is keep it out of the agenda. There is legal work going on regarding Anglo Irish Bank and it’s employees. The least thing prejudicial could alter the case and at the very worse bring the whole shebang down, even her comments today could be enough. Bad form Mary Lou! The last thing I want to see is the whole case been thrown out because of stuff said and the criminals getting away with bankrupting this country!

How are you so sure of that, have you documentation to prove the outcome? Why condone possible prejudice to an upcoming case? Why cripple the process before it has come to Court and the public given the chance to hear and see all. I want at least to see that shower show up for the hearings if nothing else.

How long must we endure the “upcoming” part of this case Margaret? Should we all just sit quietly by, and sure if something happens it happens, if not, sure isn’t above our station to even question it? It’s been five years, they engaged in illegal market manipulation, possibly fraud, and exceeded capital ratios. All the charges don’t necessarily have to be proffered at once, the market manipulation one seems pretty cut and dry and that carries about a 5 year sentence I think. If nothing is happening in a criminal case which impacts the whole country, who better than an elected representative to question what has become a completely unacceptable delay in proceedings?

How any one can slag off any politician attempting to shake the truth from the weasels of this government (and the previous one), in my opinion, beggars belief. The sheer magnitude of what a tiny cabal, with the assistance of FF/FG/Lab, has done to this nation DEMANDS urgency…… not the cover up being perpetrated on behalf of the shysters that brought down the house in the first place. But as some posts have already pointed out absolutely nothing will ever come of this —- unfortunately the political system is rotten to the core. In other words reform (which was falsely promised before last GE) is not enough anymore! We need a new political system and a new constitution…… that at least might tear us away from the merry-go-round system of governance that is all about feathering nests by an unscrupulous non-altruistic mindset. A little more sinn fein and a lot less me fein perhaps.

Typical Mary Lou and SF tactics. Stir the outrage so that people won’t look at the facts. Summary judgement still seems to be the SF mantra.

The simple fact is that there are trials going to take place next year of Anglo directors. It’s taken way too long to be honest but I reckon the DPP wants to be damn sure that their case will stick before bringing this to court. The last thing anybody wants is a botched trial that let’s the Anglo directors off the hook.

The director of the Cental Bank was pointing out that for all the disgusting tone of the Anglo tapes there was nothing in them that brings any new facts to life. We all know those at the top of Anglo were a shower of contemptible arrogant people (want to use a more descriptive word there) but unless there are any new facts in the tapes that weren’t previously there what exactly should he do.

It’s great to think that we can just put people in jail with any process taking place. But the protection that these people enjoy are the same ones that the rest of us rely on as well. Thankfully we don’t live in a country where we put people away on the basis of public opinion.

Jim, maybe you should heed the words of Mary Lou: “don’t be an idiot!” Why don’t you accept certain facts? Namely: 1) the people are angry (and in spite if FG/Labour and their supporters who are all idiots) as they can see that the aforementioned idiots are too often holding the public in contempt. This is born out by the almost daily idiotic utterances that are spewed forth, with the serious expectation that we will actually believe this garbage!; 2) the prosecution of bank officials, politicians takes far, far too long in this country, and, most folk are intensely aware of this! Why is this the case? Could it be that “vested interests” in our ruling political “elite” are loathe to really pursue the issue, with the urgency that they should? What political party (other than SF) has the political courage to seriously tackle the many huge pressing problems the country faces? I for one am now a SF supporter, and, if one wants to know “why”, just mull over the full implications of the above comments I’ve made!

So there’s a situation where the central bank may have made a massive short coming in their due diligence or actively turned a blinded eye to what was going on in the banks and they’re the ones investigating it.
That’s what’s wrong with Ireland, anyone with any power is allowed police themselves.
