Social Protection dept sends letters to Irish unemployed about jobs... in the UK

The department said that Irish people “are entitled to avail of any jobs on offer in other EU countries” and that the Jaguar Land Rover posts could be of interest to them.

THE GOVERNMENT IS sending thousands of letters to the unemployed highlighting job opportunities in the UK. Correspondence issued in the last couple of days by the Department of Social Protection to those looking for work flagged 1,500 positions at the UK motor giant Jaguar Land Rover.

The move is part of EURES (European Employment Service), a European wide initiative to help jobseekers take up employment in other EU countries. At any one time, there are almost one million vacancies displayed on the EURES website.

“The service is extremely popular with jobseekers throughout Europe,” the Department said, describing it as an opportunity for Irish jobseekers to seek work in other EU countries.

“Equally, it provides jobseekers abroad with an opportunity to find work with companies based here in Ireland where such vacancies cannot be filled by jobseekers in Ireland,” it added.

Some of the jobs being offered include machinist, engine tester and purchasing manager, and the Department emphasised “that there is no obligation on the jobseeker to apply for any the positions abroad”.

“Jobseekers in Ireland are entitled to avail of any jobs on offer in other EU countries, which may reflect their skills, qualifications and experience,” said a spokesperson for the Department, adding:

The number of letters which are sent out by the Department varies according to the number of job vacancies available. There are 1,500 jobs on offer in Rover and accordingly several thousand letters are due to be issued to relevant jobseekers.

According to Minister Joan Burton’s Department, jobseekers are kept informed of any such positions that may be of interest to them, “taking into consideration the qualifications and skills profile that the Department maintains for them”.

The news comes as the prestige car company announced last month it was creating 1,700 jobs in the United Kingdom.

TheJournal.ie highlighted in July this year a notice on the former FÁS jobs website, now managed by the Department of Social Protection, which advertised a job carrynig out excavation work… In Iraq. Other of nearly 1,000 jobs outside Ireland which were advertised on that site focused on companies looking for nurses, technicians, plumbers and other professionals to work as far afield as Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Jamaica.

Can relate to all of that. It’s invisible. Having someone change plans all of a sudden is a nightmare, having planned every step of the journey for ages beforehand!

I can relate a lot to this having a TBI 11 years ago and a stroke all at 19. At the start was a very traumatic time for me and my family having to learn to walk talk dealing with serious bursts of aggression from frustration and adapt to daily living. I have a successful business now for 8 years but everyday day still has its obstacles be it the chronic fatigue that comes with a TBI to the chronic headaches or your mind just blanking out it’s not easy and as Linda says it’s invisible and very hard for people to understand what’s going on with you. I now am married and have a beautiful 19 month son that brings so much joy to my wife and I everyday and it kills me to come home some days after a bad day and he’s there just waiting for your undivided attention but your just not able.
