A MAP OF how the country voted in the Seanad referendum shows a distinct divide between Dublin, the east and south-east coast and the rest of the country with the exception of Donegal and the west Galway.
While Dublin and all of Leinster rejected the proposal to scrap the upper house there was stronger support for abolition the further west you went with the Taoiseach’s home constituency of Mayo among those to vote Yes.
The rejection of the abolition proposal in Donegals South-West and North-East is no surprise given their penchant to go against the government of the day – both constituencies were the only in the country to reject the Children’s Referendum last November.
Galway-West was the only other constituency in the west of the country which rejected the proposal.
By contrast the Court of Appeal referendum was backed even in the two Donegals with all 43 constituencies in the State voting for the new court:
