Rough seas could delay search for missing fisherman in Clare

The man was fishing with friends yesterday when a wave washed him off the rocks.

A SEARCH IS due to start again this morning for a Latvian fisherman who was washed off the rocks and into the sea off the Clare coast yesterday.

The 42-year old, who is understood to be an experienced fisherman, was fishing with four friends from the rocks at Fisherman’s Climb, Ailladee – a popular angling spot – yesterday morning. He went to the water’s edge to get a bucket of water to wash fish he had caught and a strong wave washed him into the sea.

His friends reported seeing him on the surface for around 15 minutes after he was washed out from the rocks but he has not been seen since. One of them entered the water just after the accident to try to help his friend and was later treated at the scene by coast guard members.

Yesterday searches were conducted by crews at Doolin and the Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter also assisted.

A spokesperson for Valentia Coast Guard, which is coordinating the search, told TheJournal.ie that naval divers are on their way this morning but the weather could hinder the search.

“They’ll make an assessment when they get there, we dont know if they’ll be able to dive because the weather is not very good,” they said. “It’s choppy out there, we’re expecting things to be better tomorrow.”

Four teams from the Doolin Coast Guard will conduct a shoreline search today but the spokesperson said “this is very much a diving operation now”.

Not to mention complications about international flights landing for refuel (if this wasn’t an issue they could fly home themselves).

Folks I know there is a lot of people that spend half their lives talking rubbish on social media for a bit of craic. I don’t understand it personally but please everyone just realise the gov has to order complete lockdown immediately. I drove down O’Connell street today (for urgent message) after 8 days in house with kids as per government recommendations. The footfall was nearly back to normal and it was like zombie land. Even worse than normal and the inner city is horrific for crime..it seems the gov message isn’t getting through to the locals. If Leo and his cronies have any respect for the health workers who are putting their lives at risk n not seeing kids/ families he should order lockdown immediately for period of two weeks at least as has been done in Spain France Italy etc etc

Due to the procrastination and arogance and failures of their leaders they will be the next Italy regardless of their populations obediance. In 4 weeks time they will be reporting 800 to 1000 deaths. Its very sad and tagic but the horse has bolted. All we can do is pray for the poor unfortunate people who get ill. I believe Ireland has a chance to beat this but we need a full lockdown to do it. We have a partial lockdown which is sub optimal.

Germany sent four planes to bring home its citizens stranded in Cape Town. This emergency situation demands an emergency response.
