WATCH: Taoiseach says 'there will be some good news in the Budget'

But there’s still work to do, Enda Kenny told the media at the Fine Gael national conference in Limerick today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-5BxgmUiuY

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY has said that all ministers in government will be “required to measure up in the national effort and put our country back to work”.

Speaking to the media at the Fine Gael national conference in Limerick today Kenny said that “there will be some good news in the Budget”.

He said that the main framework of the Budget has been approved but that final decisions will not be made “in respect of the details for each individual areas” until tomorrow evening’s Cabinet meeting in Dublin.

Asked about his perceived criticism of Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton during his welcoming speech last night Kenny insisted that he cooperates “very strongly with Minister Burton”:

Asked about the budget for the Department of Health, Kenny acknowledged that there “are demand led pressures in there” but said the detail would be worked out tomorrow:

All videos: Hugh O’Connell

Leo Varadkar: ‘There is only one reform party in Ireland and its name is Fine Gael’

Noonan on Budget 2014: ‘You’ll be astounded at all the good news I’ll be announcing’

I can’t remember a time when a budget was kept under wraps as much as this one. Very little speculation, leaks, and very quiet Ministers too.

Perhaps the Seanad referendum played a role in the run up to it, but I find it odd all round this time.

We need more USC and not less. It should be upped to 15% across the board and all other income taxes abolished.

The Revenue have a “high net worth” team who target the top 400 earners to ensure they are paying their fair share. The take from these people has doubled since 2008. All because of USC.

We can’t have a situation anymore where many people pay no tax at all. FF for years crowed about taking people out of the tax net when long term this is unsustainable.

A flat 15% tax on all income, with generous but graduated tax credits would cause a new but sustainable boom in our economy. But it would require laying off 80,000 Quango staff. So it won’t be done by this govt.

@ Niall: Very true. In general the Seanad Referendum worked out very well in providing a much needed distraction for the media for the month of September.

Usually the period from September to early December is filled with various reports (some originating in the media, some kite-flying from certain Government ministers) about taxes and cuts which, in the end, never materialise. This process is damaging to citizens (old people worried their pensions will be cut even though the last time the pension was cut was in the 1920s) and to businesses (consumer spending). This year the whole process seems much better with only one week of pre-budget speculation rather than the normal 3.5 months of it.

Perhaps next years Constitution Day can be scheduled shortly before the Budget too.

I believe the comment that was made was about this being the last year of painful repayments. What a crock of sh1te. We’ll be broken 70yr olds begging for a state pension worth f all whilst the wages we’ll have earned will have been pulled from our pockets through sneaky new rates and taxes. And the fat cats will still be untouched. Sickening isnt a strong enough statement….

Unworkable, populist claptrap. If you think the current quality of TDs is poor, see what earning €12,000 or so a year will do to quality. TDs also pay PRSI and other income taxes on their salaries already.

How do you propose that party’s fund themselves? The Government has reduced the amount that parties can reduce in corporate donations already, so the only other alternative is more taxpayers money.

    And what of Independent TDs?

The poor on pensions? Are you serious? The one group whose income has remained all but untouched since this whole fiasco began? The ones with medical cards? Free travel? Free TV licences? The ones who nearly rioted when it was suggested that the wealthy among them might have their medical cards means tested.

And the dole here is three times what it is in the UK. A married man with 3 kids would want a job paying him (take home) €30000 a year before it’s really worth his while going out to work.

€20 billion a year on social welfare. A total joke and the banks have nothing to do with it. Until it pays to go to work then we’re at nothing.

You don’t reform by hatcheting salaries . You just disenfranchise those who are hard workers and they go elsewhere – emigration figures prove that . Salaries have to be capped no mistake but its all about incentivising productivity . Those who work harder should be paid more , those who are coasting along need to be spotlighted and reasons for same sorted out of the system . The tax system is another disincentive for productivity
