Department spent €875,000 on media advertising in last five years

There was a surge in spending on media advertisements in 2011, with €437,992 spent that year.

THE DEPARTMENT OF Finance has spend over €875,000 on media advertising in the last five years, according to recent figures.

The figures show that spending on public advertisements in national and local print media, radio and television so far in 2013 has reached €140, 500.

The total expenditure in this area in 2012 was €179, 570 with the largest spending seen in 2011 at €437,992.

For the past five years to date in 2013, €875,069 was spend overall on these advertisements.

“Much of my Department’s media expenditure is concerned with advertisements of an obligatory nature (as stipulated by the relevant legislation) such as the advertising for senior civil servant posts and government notices in European and State publications,” Finance Minister Michael Noonan said, in response to a parliamentary question.

He added that his department is required to apply the rules governing procurement for government bodies in efforts made “to support local and national print and radio media”.

Now that figure, I do believe, is only a few hundred million short of the actual amount pumped into a, close on defucnt, government propaganda selling/advertising machine called RTE.

As is pointed out the Department of Finance is legally obliged to take out adverts for a huge range of things and they have to take them out in a wide variety of publications and radio stations. Anybody who reads a paper will see these on a regular basis. They have to be of a certain size depending on the nature of the announcement and that costs money.

Is Journal just unhappy that they aren’t included in the spend? Nothing to see here except an attempt to create some outrage. Don’t these normally get posted on slow news days?

When you have to lump together five years’ spending to come up with a biggish-looking number, you haven’t got much of a story.
