Carlow whiskey firm to create 55 jobs with €25m investment

The jobs will come on stream over the next five years as Walsh Whiskey build a new distillery and visitors centre.

WALSH WHISKEY DISTILLERY in Carlow is to create 55 new jobs over the next five years as a result of investment from a major Italian drinks firm.

Walsh Whiskey will spend €25 million to develop a new distillery and visitor experience on the banks of the River Barrow by 2016.

The expansion will create a total of 55 permanent and part-time jobs in the Carlow with up to 40 jobs  predicted to be created during the 18-month construction phase.

It is expected that construction will start in the spring of next year subject to planning with the company estimating that the distillery will have the capacity to produce 400,000 cases annually by 2016.

The growth comes directly as a result of a partnership with Italian drinks firm Illva Saronno which is known for its production of the Disaronno liqueur as well as brands such as Tia Maria.

The investment is being supported by Enterprise Ireland with Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton saying that today’s announcement is a “model of what the Government are trying to achieve” in the SME sector.

55 jobs in the plant. Should support another 50 minimum in secondary positions. Good boost to local farmers who will have contracts to produce malting grain a premium product. Locals getting drunk and having that unplanned 4th child, keeping the school open etc.

Ripple effects are always bigger than the first impact.
