Eircom enters the television market to compete with Sky and UPC

And then there were three…

EIRCOM HAS LAUNCHED a new television service which places the firm in direct competition with Sky and UPC.

Similar to its rivals, the product – entitled eVision – offers packages of television channels with add-on options such as Sky Sports, Sky Movies and Setanta Sports.

The basic package includes 34 stations and costs €10 per month.

New customers who sign up before the end of this year will receive the first half-year free of charge.

Speaking after a demonstration of the new service, Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte welcomed Eircom’s decision to enter the market.

“The new television service the company is launching today is a good illustration of the benefits that this investment can bring,” he said. “This innovation should provide more choice for TV consumers, more competition driving down prices and a boost in demand for broadband services that are becoming available.”

Me neither. They say I should be getting 17 mgs. Have had 3 different engineers out and still haven’t fixed it. Unless you go with UPC, all providers will be using the Eircom lines to deliver the broadband so no point in switching. I left UPC because their tv service was dreadful as was their customer service.

And can you explain how it’s laughable? Eircom is bigger than sky and UPC . I’m taking it you have had a negative experience with Eircom ? I was with sky and it was an absolute joke of a company and a rip off. Over 50 euro per month for “hundreds ” of channels, most of which no one actually looks at. And in this recession, eVision is only 10 euro per month and free for 6 months? Who can complain?

I hate to be blunt but I think I have to spell this out for you, Patrick [pun intended].

You started by criticising Lloyd’s spelling of “Eircom”.

Then you embarrassingly went on to mix up “your” and “you’re”.
    Now, THAT really is ironic.

If you’re going to be a spelling pedant, at least try and get your own punctuation up to scratch.

Patrick actually works for Eircom, guys.

Patrick, are Eircom management really sending you guys onto thejournal.ie to artificially skew the comments in favour of Eircom, a slowly-dying artifact of Irish telecommunications history?

It’s really sad if that is the case – they probably already work you to the bone – then you have to go onto thejournal.ie for a few more hours when you get home.

When did you stop working for Eircom, Patrick?

Your twitter account says that you currently work for Eircom – maybe you better update it then.

You must have parted ways very amicably with Eircom if you are so inexplicably vigorous in your defence of your “old” company’s reputation – I have heard that Eircom are slave drivers and there is terrible morale in the place.

Truthfully speaking, do you currently have any ties to Eircom, consultancy or otherwise?

I used to pay my bill online, but since getting the brand new eFibre in July they can’t manage online payments with an eFibre account despite promising every month that the Technical Team are working on it and it’ll be rolled out next month. Maybe.
I usually spend about 30 minutes on the phone with eircom trying to give them money to pay my bill, you’d think they’d show a little more respect. Last night it was 25 minutes on hold and 5 minutes paying my bill, no thanks I don’t want to sign up for direct debit, so I complained about this on their forum and pointed out that they charge for their time so from now on that’s what I’m going to do. I reckon I’ll call it €4 for last night but from here on I do NOT charge minimum wage. Seems reasonable to me.

There was a chap in the uk who got fed-up with telemarketers ringing him and started telling them before he talked to him that he charged for him time on the phone. He sent an invoice which wasnt paid so he brought them to the small claims court and won.

As for the horizon box, it’s two years late and it’s most talked about feature is that the channels now change when you press the button on the remote as opposed to 5 seconds later. The wireless signal is also shocking compared to the stand alone routers.

From my own personal experience Eircom/Emobile are the pits. The phone signal (mobile) has in the last few months in my area for done reason gone kaput. Rang up Emobile after so many calls not going through. Wanted to leave. Told I’d have to buy out the remaining if my contract. I currently have 2 months left then I’m leaving Eircom for the broadband and Emobile for the phone and joining someone else.

Log the dropped calls with them as they are contractually obliged to provide the service you’re paying for. If you keep loosing coverage during calls and you inform them of it 3 or more times the contract is null and void. That’s the way O2 operate anyway so it should be the same for that bunch.

I dunno what everyone is so upset about. Eircom tv is simply this. When you sign up an eircom engineer will arrive on your door step with a flat packed cardboard box, ( which he will assemble in your sitting room ) he will then sit in the box and direct you to point your remote at it. As you aimlessly press the remote button ou will have to dictate to him what channel you wish to watch and he will act the part. Simples :)

Think I will maintain my “wouldn’t let them onto the street let alone into the house” attitude for 6 months. UPC are decent enough. Their 10 euro month on the web site is instantly building mistrust for me. However they have connectivity to many houses so interesting to see what will happen.

If you live in rural areas you are doing well to get 200k download speed be it with eircom, the nbs or satellite and unfortunately people think is acceptable. Whole sections of society are off line or have a useless service.
