In Pictures: The cast of RTÉ drama Charlie get to work

Aidan Gillen as Charlies Haughey and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as PJ Mara.

THE FIRST IMAGES from the filming of RTÉ’s new political drama, Charlie, have sent us right back to the 1980s.

If the styling, the hairstyles and acting power of the billed cast is lived up to, we are in for a treat.

We can’t wait for a look at all the grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented events.

Before we get too excited, let’s take a look at what Aidan Gillen, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Risteárd Cooper and Peter O’Meara were up to today in Dublin:

Mara on Haughey drama: “I’m sure RTÉ will be, as usual, even handed and balanced”

Guess who’s going to play Charles Haughey in a new drama?

These actors better try something different for their next job, they’ll end up being typecast if all they play is gangsters all the time

Aiden Gillen played a corrupt mayor in the wire, a gangster in love/hate and a lying manipulator in game of thrones. Never was there a man more suited to play Charles Haughey..

Why not stop there…let this film show us the extent of the damage that knacker of a man inflicted on this nation… Why not go straight into production showing us the protege knacker replacement ahern and forever dismiss the notion he was a man of the people…

In fairness, he stopped being a looker a few years ago.

wonder will they ever make ones about biffo or edna when they kick the bucket, then again any show based on them 2 would be a comedy about how even a complete idiot with no personality or morals can become leader of a country

Eh … not David Herlihy and most likely not Ray Burke. My guess? Risteard Cooper as either Garret Fitzgerald or Martin Mansergh

There was a great radio documentary on Dave Fanning’s show about 5 years ago with loads of actors and writers, producers etc from Fr Ted. Arthur Matthews said RTE was never offered Fr Ted. It was a Channel 4 gig from the beginning. They would probably have censored the bejaysus out of it in any event so thank your lucky stars Channel 4 made it

It was made at a time when the politicians were still in tow to the clergy kissing their ring etc,RTE would never have been allowed to make this series, the church would have objected, and that would be the end of the matter, its just as well Channel 4 got to make it.
