Two women sentenced to prison over seized cigarettes

The Lithuanian nationals were sentenced for evasion and attempted evasion of duty.

TWO WOMEN IN their twenties appeared in court today charged with evading duty on cigarettes.

Two female Lithuanian nationals appeared before Judge Denis McLouglin today following the seizure of 35,400 cigarettes by officers from Revenue’s Customs Services at Dublin Airport last week.

They each received a five month custodial sentence.

The two women were aged 25 and 26 and were both sentenced to five months in prison for evasion and attempted evasion of duty in respect of the “NZ Gold” and “Kent” cigarettes. The women’s sentence was backdated to 8 October 2013.

The cigarettes had a retail value of €16,890 and a potential loss to the Exchequer of €14,524.

Revenue said that if any businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes, they can contact them in confidence on (free phone) 1800 295 295.

Why is there no description given of the attacker? Surely that would help a lot more than this little soiree.

So the community should do nothing? This march shows that people will be looking out and making sure any attacker knows that they should be looking over their shoulder. Proper community spirit. Well done.

@Deborah Behan: Community patrols work a lot better than soirees that are just an exercise for some people to post pictures of themselves on social media.

But that’s a lot more hard work and Corrie is on most nights.

@Deborah Behan: Where does @Daffy the Bear say anything along the lines of “The Community should do nothing” If you think a march is the extent of what a community can do, you are an idiot. Here in Limerick we had a suicide epidemic at the bridges crossing the Shannon, “The community” organised and now have constant patrols of groups of concerned citizens walking the bridges at night to help prevent such horrible things from happening. Maybe the Shankhill community would be better served actually patrolling the areas at night if they are truly concerned, rather than having a large virtue signal collective announce something to everyone that they already know, sexual attacks are bad and should not be done “Nuh duh”. The attackers know what they are doing is wrong and I am pretty certain they are looking over their shoulder already. What a silly sentiment you make here as to the productivness of the protest. Protest is better served for means where it can actually incite change, protesting against criminals being criminals or sex attackers being sex attackers is almost as illogical as your response to @Daffy the Bear’s smarmy not entirely unfunny remark.

Do nothing and you’re told you should do “something”. Do “something” and you get told won’t do anything. Can’t win!! Do I personally think this will change anything?! Probably not, however they are out there doing SOMETHING! Good on them I say! It’s very easy to sit here, give out about whatever the given topic is but it’s more useful to get up and DO something positive to help one’s self and others! And now I will get back down off my soap box…. As you were….

Maggsjacob, I agree with you completely. There may be lots of other things to march about and nothing is stopping people from organising those marches.
As for using feminist as a derogatory term (Emmet O’Keefe), first and for all, the people who organised this may not actually appreciate being labelled by you, just because they care about other womens’ safety. Secondly, did you consider that there are men who are also concerned for the women in their lives and that some of these men were also taking part in the march? If there was a march about something related to mens’ rights and where men are treated unfairly by society – for instance in relation to fathers’ rights – would I take part in that march? D**n right I would! I have seen first hand the effects of this.
Lastly, please stop assuming that any self confessed feminist with an opinion you don’t agree with is speaking for every feminist. Newsflash – women, just like men, are not a homogeneous mass, we are individuals capable of having our own opinions. One woman does not act and speak for all women they speak for themselves, just like one man does not act or speak on behalf of other men, only for himself

That area has always been rough as hell and its only a matter of time before its back to being a no-mans land. I remember a story in my youth of a community officer who was tied up and had his clothes stripped.

Well done to all involved, we have a bit of a Monster in the Shankill area who’s preying on women. A sex pervert skiving on women? Well done to all you people who turned out for this walk & highlighting this depraved little creep who’s annoying & scaring the people in the surrounding area of Shankill.

Let’s hope he’ll have enough sense to quit while he’s ahead or better still caught by the Garda on one of his outings. No woman should have to feel unsafe in the area that they live in, especially when there’s a sex pervert stalking women!

Shankill is a lovely area with nice people, I wouldn’t hear a bad word said about it. A sting operation needs to be put in place, with an under cover scantily clad ban garda walking ostensibly alone and lost, looking at google maps on her phone. Its an outrage that people have to take to the streets to protest for the safety of our women in this day and age – its more like Dickensian London
