Adobe security breach much worse than originally feared

An attack by hackers had been initially estimated to affect three million customers but it is now believe 38 million accounts have been compromised.

A SECURITY BREACH AT Adobe could be far worse than originally estimated with the software company now estimating that at least 38 million users have been affected.

Earlier this month the company said that hackers breached its defences and stole source code and credit card numbers of nearly three million customers.

According to the blog Krebs On Security however,  the company now believes that the breach may also have affected some users of their Photoshop software significantly widening the problem.

After the initial breach Adobe were forced to reset the passwords of customers whose information was taken and alert people whose credit or debit card numbers were swiped.

The California-based company also investigated the theft of source code crafted into its products and originally said it didn’t believe it increased the risk of hackers breaking into programs people may be using.

Adobe makes widely used computer programs including Acrobat, Reader, Photoshop and a ColdFusion web application development tool.

    An urban legend is that many of these anti virus software makers are actually the ones behind malware etc just so people will buy their products.

    It sounds like big pharma tactics that exist in the land of legendary urbanity;
    I remember when the foot and mouth broke out in Ireland a few years ago ; It “escaped” from a lab no less , and what happened the lab?
    “Work away lads sure we’ll call it an accident because it was an accident!” …….”wasn’t it?”
    Of course it was !

    Adobe recently moved most of their software to a subscription based system whereby customers pay a monthly fee to access software they would have previously purchased outright. This greedy move has p!ssed off a lot of people who are basically stuck with CS6 and not eligible for updates/upgrades unless they subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud… I wonder how many customers will stay with Adobe after this latest development.

    I got an email from adobe the other the to say my account details had been reset because of a “security breach”. I didn’t even realise I had an account with them. I had to spend Sunday afternoon changing all my passwords just in case I had used the adobe one more than once. It was a right pain in the hole.

    Security has always been Adobe’s Achilles heel. Flash was a godsend for hackers as it was extremely vulnerable to browser exploits, and was banned from ios devices for that reason. In fact, Adobe software is so insecure they ship an updater to patch bugs on installed applications as they are (frequently) found. It’s no surprise to learn their internal security is so poor too. Hopefully they at least encrypted and salted the stolen info to give customers time to change their details.

    Thinking of signing up for the @adobe Creative Cloud? Some of these horror stories might change your mind. http://forums.adobe.com/community/creative_cloud

    Remember to change your passwords and check your bank account for the next several month to make sure the hackers that got all that sensitive data from Adobe don’t access your accounts.
